Im looking to buy a crew cab 4x4 and just looking for some experiences and info on what is good and what is not. Ive got upto 6K ish to spend but want something that wont let me down. Im liking the navara d22 but would only get one with the engine moddifacation to stop it throwing a rod through the block, also just had a look at isuzi rodeo 3.0td. Any info would be great. P.s ive heard that the isuzi is a bit better on fuel and can manage just over 30mpg smile

2006 onward L200's are fantastic IMO my Dad had one for the stables after his Navara broke numerous times !

They are abit thirsty considering what it does, also advised to get it chipped as it transforms it into a really good all rounder.

On the assumption you'll never have to turn round in a small space.

Hi-lux.

Although you dont state what you want it for? Is it for actual off road use, or just occasionally crossing a bit of mud?

Mate's dad runs a Ranger. Takes serious abuse and if I'm correct in thinking on or nearing 300,000 miles. Y-reg so a bit older than you're looking at. A neighbour used to run a Navara and just had constant problems with it, mainly electrical. However, I have no idea whether his is the exception to the rule as I did think Nissan had very good build quality?

My girlfriend uses a ranger day in day out off roading in the Highlands. Going up tracks through forests etc. The truck hasnt let her down yet.

L200's on the other hand 2 have so far tried to kill her both on the A9 not even slightly off road.

One shot a piece of the suspension/steering through the drivers footwell and I cant rember what the other breakdown was but it was something equally dangerous.

They dont use Navaras

Mates forestry company bought a couple of new L200s last year, so far both have had gearboxes rebuilt under warranty with <30,000km on the clock. According to the dealer TADTS.

Old Navaras were solid but heard mixed things about the new ones so I'd say the Hilux is still the benchmark.

I like rangers a lot.

I'd have one, or possibly an L200.

Takes a bit of looking but I've run two F150's both V8's with LPG which work out to 30mpg.

One was a 3rd suicide door and one was a proper 4 door.

Both were below £6k and are simple to work on and are bigger, faster and cheaper to run than any European stuff. Only issue was my wife wouldn't drive them as they are BIG.

VW T5 4motion crewcab? 2.5tdi, 130bhp-ish. Much quicker and more comfy... Not as capable if you really need offroad ability but they'll manage fine on a grassy field with decent tyres.

You also get the world of engine swap options for as much HP as you do or do not want. And then you've got a landy so the modifying will start, first its some tasteful chequer plate. and then you've got it jacked 8 inches with Yellow trans gear and bush shields/Guards, an external roll cage, 4 high lift jacks, front and back PTO winches and a fat snorkel just in case the 8 inch lift didn't do it....

I'm surprised at the first respondent. Maybe he has an awkwardly shaped arse, or ...maybe the last of the old shape?

The 2007- Rodeos are absolute class leaders in every way; physical capability, engine performance, comfort etc.

Would absolutely be my first choice.
