Bought a used trailer a couple of months back. I know the chap that owned it, all above board (lives in the next village up from me).

Just wondered if there was anywhere I could register it so if it did get pinched, the Police know whose it is?

Its a car transporter.

1) big locks & lots of them
2) Grind (dremel) & or stamp your postcode onto the chassis somewhere visisble & also hidden away in case it get recovered you can ID it.

Having owned several car trailers just assume whatever you do with it someone will still try & nick it!

There are some nift GSM/phone based alarms that might be worth investigating too

It has a chassis number etc already (on the frame and on a plate on the A Bar).

But even with a ground in postcode, name etc if there is no register, how do the Police tie it up to an original owner?

Mine's in a garage, with a car on it, with 3 chains around it and immovable objects, behind electric gates, with alarms on all doors and windows and I chain it to the 4x4 at track days so I may well be being overly paranoid. :-)

Oh and a hitch lock.

Still strange that there isnt a register.

They look up the postcode and house number, then ring you. Not rocket science, is it?

Get a numberplate made up with your post code on it, and affix it to somewhere on the chassis, and use a drill to make holes 1" apart through all of the letters of the post code so that it is perminantly marked with your code ....... etching and grinding is too easy to remove or obscure.

Come on, it's simple and obvious.

You put your postcode on the trailer.

Your trailer is stolen, you ring the Police and report it.

They enter the details in to their computer.

Your trailer is later found, they put in the postcode in a simple database query, and what do you know? Your name and address pops up.

They ring you, tell you they've found what's left of your trailer.

I'd also suggest marking the trailer in a REALLY obvious and hard-to-remove fashion.

The Police get loads of reports of "XXX Trailer stolen" but very few of "XXX trailer stolen - distinctive due to it's being entirely power-coated Barbie Pink" smile

hitchlocks dont really stop the people who view trailers as 'wheeled gold' as they simply hook a chain through the a frame and drag it away.

post code, surname and phone number stamped into various places will help getting it back if its pinched

the best tip, if you are worried that it may be pinched is to make it unattractive.

my car trailer is painted pink.....
