Well actually it happened on Friday...but my claim was sorted and agreed within 2 hours and the cheque through my door by Monday! (Their speed of sorting it all for me has guaranteed my custom with them next year already) and so as a result I now have £2000 (upper limit) to spend on my Daily Diesel.

So what are the choices? Well, I don't really know what I want to be honest, but it will need to be either a bit of fun, good looking or a little bit different and not too uncomfortable - i.e. another toy. Though obviously I would be great full if the car could be a mix of all.

I have so far already organised to go view a 406 2.2 coupe in blue with leather (though lack of service history proof is making me a little weary, but at least I can see if I like it or not). These are very rare; I think it looks great and should still average 45mpg.

There is a 2003 Golf GT TDi 150 nearby, which is actually both faster and (apparently a fair bit more economical too) though Golf's are very common.

2002 MG ZR 2.0 TD - same engine as the rover 45 it will be replacing, again will apparently also out drag the 406, reviews seem to say they handle quite well, but I didn't really think the engine is that great in the 45 and looks like it may have been owned by a bit of a Barry boy (well the 3 local to me anyway)

2003 mondeo tdci 130 - again very common shape (though I have always liked this shape) has a hatched boot so easier to get big things in (instead of using the trailer with the 406) but doesn't scream interesting to drive.

2003 156 2.4 JTD - Love the look of it, has 150 bhp and well equipped but the MPG isn't great and a friend of mine says he struggles to average 40mpg.

So....Finally we reach the point where I ask for options and opinions.

Go for the Golf, I loved my GT TDi, I had the 170bhp version a good mix of decent mpg and power

I always thought that insurance was there to replace your car like-for-like if the worst should happen. I didn't think you could just get whatever you like?

Pah - what do I know? I only pay my insurance - I don't claim from it.

Well I was awarded £685 as a cash in leu (sp) payment, so the car hasn't been written off but instead accounts for its loss in value. Have sold the car for a small fee and had some saved up already as I was on the lookout for a new car soon anyway. It just so happens that the new car's arrival has been moved forward.

As for the golf, one of my other fears is that I will compare it too much to the 205 and corsa (I know it is very different) and even the fiesta...and when coming from one of them it will just feel like a non event, though the extra power over the corsa and fiesta will I'm sure be pleasant, as will the much improved comfort over the 205.

It's there to make you able to replace your car like-for-like.

It sounds more like he is having a dig at the OP for making a claim

I always thought that, then someone wrote my car off and now I realise that they will give you a pittance.

Thats the impression it gave me too, so glanced over it without causing an arguement (hopes)

Still not many options or opinions yet though.

I've got a 2003 Alfa 156 2.4 JTD.
Absolutely love the thing.

Get 43mpg (Measured, not trip computer) mainly motorway driving, not hanging about.

PM. me if you have any specific questions

smile

No specifics at this point, just checking the market to see whats about, I'm not hugely desperate to find a new car at the moment as I do have others that will do the journey for now, but not in the long run. Really a comparison to another car you have been in would be best. What the acceleration is like for A road overtaking and B road fun(again with comparison please) service costs you've had to/will need to endure and just generally how nice a place it was to be in.
- guess these should really be applied to all suggested transport.

Thanks

Of the cars on your list, I'd be looking at the either the Peugeot (the French do seem be good at diesels) or the Alfa

Heart would say Alfa every time - A good looking car (it's an Alfa right)

We ran a fleet of 2.4 JTD alfas for a hire company we were involved with and although they do sound nice for a diesel and shift, they were quite troublesome and quite delicate, looked stunning though!

They do look great - The Alfas, though I think the 406 does too. Plus the Peugeot engines do seem to be very reliable and remap well (for the future though). Why would you say the Alfa engine was "delicate"?

Was referring more to the whole car as being a bit delicate, but you have to understand they were hire cars so were getting thrashed more than normal, in contrast we also ran Golf GT TDi 's and they were rock solid
