Golf GT TDI 170 MK5's what are they like ?
Discussion
Pretty nice smooth torquey delivery from the engine, a great all rounder in all things except delivering driving thrills/tactility. A competent tool.
As for a3s, much prefer them. The only real difference apart from the looks is the interior which is much better and the concert and symphony stereo are better than anything you'll find in a golf.

Really nice car, good all rounder. Find one with leather and you have very desirable car.
DPF is less of a problem than the internet makes out. If you understand how it works you will have less chance of it clogging up, and know how to correct it if it does. Don't buy one if you predominately drive short journeys.
Injectors are also a worry. Very expensive, some cars outside of warranty were replaced by VW under good will, so if you have full VW history and have the problem you have a fair chance of VW doing it FOC.

Agreed that the biggest issue with the 170 engine is not the DPF (although thats fairly costly if it goes), its the injectors, which are quite prone to failing at 70-100k and are bloomin expensive to replace, think £400 parts plus another £200 labour for each injector. My wife's got a 2007 Seat Altea FR with that engine and we've had two injectors fail on us, both times the engine cuts completely with absolutely no warning, once stranding her on a busy roundabout, the second she was only just able to get to a safe side road to avoid being stuck on a fast country B road.
We've had a few Seats over the last 10 years and thankfully for us it counted for something as Seat were brilliant about it. Despite being 9 months / 20k out of warranty and not having bought it from a Seat dealership, they covered the cost of the first failure and when the second one went a couple of months later, agreed to pay the failed one plus the two remaining original injectors all FOC.
Still, its far from ideal as I've yet to rebuild my full confidence in it despite all 4 being replaced, and if you're not lucky enough to get the failures covered under warranty/good will then its an extremely expensive fault to fix.
