Not been home for along time so this is rather old news.

Recieved a letter from a certain car maker stating: "Due to the recent tsunami in Japan there may be a shortage of new xxxxs. Ring now to avoid any delay."

Any other examples of crude and opportunistic marketing?

In fairness that's probably the dealer sending you that, not the manufacturer, especially if they're asking you to ring them.

I've seen the tsunami used to shift Korean cars, however. (Hyundai/Kia)

I'd have their marketing boff shot for that feeble attempt personally.

Following Winehouse's death Microsoft tweeted:

"remember Amy Winehouse by downloading the ground-breaking 'Back to Black' over at Zune".

Microsoft weren't the only guilty ones, itunes had her prominently displayed on the front page and I'd put money on the fact that they weren't the only company that used her death to sell her music.
