Looking to help the other half get rid of a 1.6 2001 golf, that's done good service, and is still low mileage for it's age (60k), but would like something more modern. Possibly also just feeling a bit wimpy and feel like a really big bill is just round the corner (no evidence to support this!)

Requirements:
Cheap running costs/repairs: c.10k miles a year
Not awkwardly slow or "embarrassing" to drive
Either a hatchback or estate (capable of stowing a MTB or two inside)
35+ mpg (driven 25miles a day)
Manufactured in the last 6/7 years and under 80k miles.

Looking around, with a budget of 4-5k there doesn't appear to be many options. So far narrowed it to Mazda 3/Focus Mk2/VW Golf/Mazda 6 - but it appears that may be stretching the budget too far.

So my question is, have I missed something obvious?
