This is a slightly odd situation, hopefully this will make sense...

November last year I was driving the OH's car on her insurance policy and had an accident which I was held at fault for. As her car was worth nothing we didn't claim on her insurance and just scrapped the car.

The policy on my car is now coming up for renewal on which the other half is a named driver.
I'm slightly confused as to what information I should put down on the forms when searching for a quote for me as policy holder and her as a named driver.

Me: I was driving, so have to put that I had an accident, but I never claimed. I guess it still goes down as a 'claim' for the purposes of the form?

OH: She wasn't driving, but it was her policy. She hasn't claimed on her policy, but the 3rd party claimed. Does she also have to declare the claim/accident?

As a final point, I have no idea of how much the claim was for, or even if the claim from the 3rd party has been settled yet. What value should I put on the form to answer that question?

For clarity, and to appease the keyboard warrior types. I have no interest in trying to scam or lie to the insurance companies, I just want to make sure I fill the form in accurately.

Thanks.

I renewed one of my vans a few month back and when asked about have you had any claims in the last 5 years, I said No as for some reason I thought she said 3 years when I first applied.
I got a letter saying I owe nearly £80 extra because of the theft of contents claim.

I said sorry and paid up.

Just try and get it right mate. because that 80 quid hurt more than the first cost lol.

You need to put the information under your name as you were the driver, if your OH takes out a policy on her car without you on it goes under her name.
But this can vary per insurer so it's best to ring and ask what the insurer wants to rate on.

You've had an accident. She has made a claim. Answering the questions should be simple based on that. Ask her Insurer about costs of the claim as they must have an idea by now.

I'm sure that on the insurance disclosure form it says "Have you had any accidents or claims within the last 5 years". You've had the accident, she's had the claim, both of you now have to declare it.

As said it'll vary per insurer some insurers will only put it under the driver at the time if the policyholder (of the crashed car) is on the insurance too as they don't want to rate on the same claim twice.

Some wink have an option for "Named Driver Claim" which I assume/hope is what you put for a driver who has claimed on their policy for a named driver's accident

Indeed, proof that it'll vary per insurer.
