Clean it inside and out. Make sure you have all of the paperwork to hand to show to the buyer.

Don't let him take it for a test drive without you.
Don't let him take it for a test drive without proof of FC insurance.

Don't let him set it on fire.

Not necessarily. I would normally agree with this and take pleasure in haggling with garages, but when I sold my 2.0 GTV I had it up for £4995 (I think). The first guy that came brought his wife with him, they liked it, seemed like nice genuine people. It was spotless inside and out and I made some effort to come across as an anorak who kept it in top nick that I was. Straight off he offered me £4700 which I accepted as I was expecting to have someone to start from low 4k's and I thought it was a fair price. Also dealing with people who are comfortable with their decisions leads to you having an easier life etc later on.

Whilst this is wise, it's never going to happen. It's a gotcha of selling your own car, no-one will buy a car without driving it but they're not going to spend money to get specific FC cover to do that (and their own insurance will, at best, offer TP cover).

To make a sale you MIGHT have to accept TP cover and take the chance they wipe-out your car (it's not enormously likely, is it?)

Advice: Be relaxed and confident - answer questions honestly and don't talk-up the car too-much (always sounds suspicious).

Be prepared for a low bid - anyone with sense will see what you're going to take and don't be insulted by it.

e.g. If you're asking £4K and they offer £2K, just smile and say "err no" - DON'T counter-offer until they get closer to a realistic price which - if they're not just wasting your time - they will.

Not a bad idea to have someone with you although considering the time you've probably sold it by now.

I sold a Golf once, advertised it on PH for a while with no luck. Dropped the price by £500 and got a call straight away. Bloke came to view it and offered the asking price which obviously I accepted straight away. It wasn't till he left and I picked up the print out of the ad he left behind that he saw it at the previous price and was obviously starting with a low offer! Doh........

Be prepared for them never to turn up. Or never to come back after agreeing a price

As you've said its your first time at selling here's a few basics, you might also want to have a quick look online at the autotrader site as they have a step by step idots guide.

1 Clean the car inside + out
2 Get all paperwork together, so log book, service history, receipts for work you've had done.
3. Unless you're happy + they show you proof of insurance then ONLY you drive
4. DON'T let them just pop round the block in it leaving the car they came in with you (as that could well have been nicked already).
5. DON'T let your keys disappear from sight
6.. Decide what your bottom price is and STICK to it, they're the first person to view doesn't mean they'll be the only one
7. Remember its cash cash or cash if they want the car there and then, make sure to check if its all being paid in fifty's.

Good luck
