Chip fat power
Discussion
I'm sure there's a few threads on this - it works fine in older diesels (pre common-rail/DI engines) but it's a BIT more complex for newer ones (given that wrecking a £2K diesel pump isn't "economic")
Biggest issue is that people who have the oil now know it's worth something - this almost wipes-out the point in most cases (our local takeaway mixes their veg oils with fish oils and allsorts, making it unusable).

Chap in work has a veggie oil Merc.
Its currently running 100% veggie oil, still has it on 80-100% in winter, has full setup, heaters etc.
If you run an old diesel where its suitable, when Costco have offers on, you can save 30p a gallon.
Unless of course you are friendly with your local chip shop and have a filtering setup...

I was doing this about ten years ago in my 309 diesel snotter. I used to be able to buy veg oil in aldi for 30 odd pence a litre, the looks I got chucking that into the tank in the car park to get me home.
Used to smell weird too, I did try 100 % veg in it but it was a bugger to start in the cold, trail and error and all that as it wasn't really that common then.

Filtering (for older cars, again) is often as simple as some tights and coffee filters.
Buying veg. oil new and using it is pointless tho (since it more than quadrupled in price in the last 10 years) - the saving will barely pay for new fuel filters and the time you'll need to spend cleaning the system from time to time.

This isn't exactley true. If you use new clean veggie from Asda (99p for Smart Price), you will have to change the filter every week for 4 weeks, after that you can leave it to every 6 or 12 months. At the moment, 99p compared to £1.35/£1.40 is pretty cheap and the cars pass the emissions easier than on regular diesel.Buying veg. oil new and using it is pointless tho (since it more than quadrupled in price in the last 10 years) - the saving will barely pay for new fuel filters and the time you'll need to spend cleaning the system from time to time.
We have a garage in Wirral and have quite a few customers that run their cars on either 100% veggie or 90%. The cars tend to run smoother and cleaner too.
The smell is awful. Only use this stuff in older cars otherwise you will cry later. Pug 205D 1.8 and Fiesta 1.8D are two cars I recall.
Hope this helps.
I have a Merc diesel which would run perfectly well on veg but with the price of new SVO (99p/ltr absolute cheapest) its just not worth it considering you would lose a few MPG and need to change filters/seals so frequently. Personally I have no wish to spend my evenings kerb crawling dodgy kebab shops for old oil and hermiting away in the shed filtering out manky goop.
There's no beating the system I'm afraid, we're over a barrel.

Fast forward to 1:30 and see little Bev and no laughing at his dungarees
In aberdeen 5 pence more then arising about with vegetable oil

One of my customers had a proper diesel/veg` conversion fitted to his old Peugeot 106 Diesel that cost him £1500!!! Big 25ltr container in the boot, had to keep loads of spare containers at home, car stunk like a chip shop,I replaced fuel filters regularly,in the end decided it a waste of time and switched permanently back to diesel.
Don’t use chippy oil as by the time you've messed about with filtering it, it's not the bargain it would seem to be . . . however I do mix 30L of Costco veg oil in with a tank of diesel in my Shogun Sport, full veg oil without a pre heater is a little too thick and causes the car to go into limp mode
Really interesting replies guys. I can see why it's kinda fallen out of favour. I've got more interested as I'm looking at old diesel Land Rovers for the oncoming winter (Disco 200tdi)
The thought that before the weather gets too cold I could run cheap oil for fuel is very tempting. However it does seem that it would not really be economically viable.

There's a load of b

I've been runiing on veg oil for nearly two years now and no fuel filter change required, I just fill up and drive the same as with diesel but 40p a litre cheaper.
it's good as long as you take precautions to prevent build up on the walls of your cylinders which will ruin the engine
