Myself and the missus are about to spend a week touring Scotland in the MGB. Neither of us have been up for years, so can the PH Northern Chapter recommend any "must do" roads and visits? We're looking at the highland area and above, I'm told that we have to go to Loch Ness, but apart from that have no concrete plans.

Oh, and can you order some sun please? We get enough rain in Lancashire thanks smile

Best to post this in the Scotland forum; there have been a couple of similar threads recently.

Can't help with the rain but can recommend visiting the Isle of Skye. Not sure of specific names but there are plenty of fantastic roads all over the Highlands.

Did this a year ago, came up from Somerset, went up the right hand side, along the top and down the left side!!

We had a different hotel every night in a diff place, if you enjoy sightseeing while driving you'll love it, we were lucky that there was snow on the mountains which added to it, a fantastic place once you get into the highlands i'm sure you won't be dissapointed!!

@jonnydm absolutely dead right.

Almost any road to Skye is good but they are often very busy. This can often lead to much dissapointment. Personally there are many roads around Perthshire (Where I grew up) These roads have all you will need, plus many wonderful towns and villages for eating and staying, if you need suggestions as to where I'll be more than happy to suggest.

The best road I've travelled so far though is the A816 going south west from Oban. It can lead to wonderfully picturesque areas, plus the twists and turns up round and down the mountainous area are amazing making it a truly great driving road.

It's hard to go wrong in Scotland so choose an area you want to go to and then choose the more convoluted way. You'll be certain to get a good road and experience smile

The A82 in general is a great road. Not in the best condition but on a good day it really is a cracker!

Try this:

A82 from Dumbarton, up past the side of Loch Lomond, Follow the A83 up across Rest and be Thankfull to Inverurie. Then take the A819 to Dalmally then take a right along the A85 to Tyndrum.

From Tyndrum follow the A85 east then you have the choice of the A85 or the A84. The A85 takes you to Callander or the A84 takes you to Crieff.

This is a must do.

Remember no speeding in the villages and don't drive like a dick.

Another vote for the A82 skirting Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe. It is breathtaking.

If you plan to 'make progress' on this road may I suggest some sort of active laser countermeasures? A mate was enjoying the road in his Corrado VR6 years ago when he was invited for a chat with Plod mid-hoon.

It's even more fun at nought-foot-six in an aeroplane. Allegedly.

Another good route if you have a fast touring car is to go up the A9 to the Gleneagles turnoff and instead of turning left to go there, turn right to go towards Kinross and Glencoe the roads are quite smooth and sweeping plus the scenery is amazing

Oh and a wee shout out to the road that taught me how to drive quickly. the B8033 from Dunblane to Braco (Through Kinbuck) approx 5.5 miles of narrow, bumpy, technical wonder.

Glendevon and Kinross, FRA53R? Good call. The scenery through the Ochils is great.

Aye Glendevon, sorry it's been a long night smile There's good chance to stop and enjoy a picnic round there (Damp though it's likely to be)

The A87 from Invergarry to Skye is simply stunning. It handily takes you in the direction of the Bealch Na Ba (sp?) over to Applecross which is another stunner.

That's my favourite road, through Glen Shiel. The first time I drove it, I went back and did it again. smile

Probably a mixture of camping & B&B, depending on the weather. So yeah, a few recommendations will be great, thanks smile

The applecross in is brilliant. I wasn't a massive fan in the road. Possibly as I was clenched during most of it. The roads are mostly very good. I like the road along the side of Loch carron. There is also a little tunnel which I enjoyed flying through in 2nd!

Thanks all, didn't expect such a big response. A82 and the Rannoch Moor road look like a given, since we'll be heading that way anyway. Didn't know about the stuff up at Applecross, we'll probably have a look over to Skye so that will fit in rather nicely.
Speeding unlikely to be too much of a problem, the 'B is a fun steer but anything much over 70 is "gritted teeth" territory biggrin
