What with the price of decent rubber these days, i can't help but look at the myriad of part worn tyres on ebay and the such like.

There's loads of choice, but all the best ones (decent brand with 6mm+ tread depth) have been repaired in one way or another.

Now, this wouldn't bother me on the shed (Micra) but the Saab wears 225/45 17 and tends to get driven a little more 'spirited'. Therefore relying on someones attempt to fix a puncture properly bothers me somewhat!

Thoughts?

Well, as its the tyres that stick your vehicle to the road and can potentially save you and your passangers lives, i would invest good money in my tyres.

Just make sure you shop about and even haggle a bit, you can grab a bargain or two.

Part worns for me are a big no no

If it "bothers" you - don't buy them. Less demand off people makes them cheaper - win-win biggrin

My car wears 285/35/18 Contis - I got a set of part worns (the correct MO fitment too) with 6mm of tread on all four for £350.

I am not dead.

I've also had tyres which I have punctured. I have had these part worn tyres repaired and - the madness - even done trackdays on them on my 1000cc bike.

I am not dead.

I do see the point about the importance of tyres but if you bought a used Saab it would have part worns on it. They may even have been repaired.
How many people fit new boots on a car they have just bought to ensure their provenance?

This would be what you're wanting:-

They're brilliant and cheap as chips for brand new tyres, many owners on the Z4 forum run them and swear by them.

I'm trying a set of these next for my SL - my last set of (new) Contis were £840 and I can save a few hundred using FK452s and I've not seen a bad word about them.

Truth be told these days my driving has slowed down a lot - my major concern now is tyre life - I'd like to know if the Falkens last longer.

225/45/17 is the most common tyre size used in the UK nowadays, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a decent tyre at a good price. Try looking on somewhere like Camskill or Blackcircles. If their range is too pricey then Ebay should show up some cheap partworns.

There is part worn and there is part worn. I suppose it depends who you buy from.

In my days of pauperhood, long gone I'm pleased to say, I bought 2. A few days later something just didn't seem right with the steering. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it had just changed.

I got under the car and the 2 tubeless tyres they had put on both had tubes in them. The reason I found this out (rather than the obvious glance at the valves) was that both tubes were bulging through gaping tears in the sidewalls eek

And both tyres fitted (coincidentally) with the ripped sidewalls on the inside of the wheels.

That has put me off for life I'm afraid.

Been using part worns on my cars for the last 3 years, subaru impreza trackcar, jaguar xjr and landrover discovery, never had a problem, if you think about it every car on the road is on part worns !

Whilst a brand new set of quality boots is ideal, part worns aren't to be dismissed too readily. I picked up a pair of 255/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sports for the XJS for 10% of their new price. 5mm tread left and one had a repair, but it was in the very centre of the tread and I had the tyre fitter check that all was well with it.

Grip levels are noticeably improved over the mid-range Cooper tyres that were on there. Admittedly they were down to the limit in the centre band due to over inflation in the past, though the majority of the tread still had plenty of depth left.

As others have said, invariably a second hand car with come with what are, effectively, part worn tyres.

Now part worn budget tyres... that probably is one step too far!

Yeah, wouldn't entertain a budget part worn. In most cases they're only a few beans short of what they cost new!

It's not so much the fear of buying part worn - i've bought plenty in the past and had no complaints

What worries me is buying a repaired set - some of the ones on ebay have repairs at the very edge of the tyre, or a plug so large it suggests the tyre was punctured by a dildo!

Looks good, cheers

BTW, what's "flange protection"?

Do it, while your at it, get some part worn brake pads/disc's, some part worn ball joints, some part worn wheel bearings etc...

Sorry, that's a little hypocritical of me, as I did go through a phase of using "part worn" tyres, you know what I found? I used two of them in the same space of time as I'd use most of a new tyre, that's assuming I didn't have issues with them going down etc, oh and all the time hoping they don't fail.

Remember that the 6mm of the tyre you are getting includes the 1.5mm you can't use, and may have been involved in some severe kerbing/collision!

Seriously, 2x part worn's are near enough the cost of one new tyre, one brand new, never used, never damaged, not repaired tyre.

Just buy a new tyre thumbup

Have you ever had a puncture on a good tyre and then had it repaired?

After that point you were driving on a part worn repaired tye - what happened next? Did your car explode in a ball of flames?

I'd rather have a nice new set of tyres, but would be happy with a set of good part worn premium brand tyres then a new set of budget tyres.

Just make the effort to buy them off a proper tyre fitting service, as someone said, there's part worns and then there's part worns (some are not worth the bother.)

It's where the sidewall sticks out past the rim so if you hit the kerb you don't damage the wheel, just the tyre!

Actually just found them on Camskill even cheaper mate.

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b0s16p6205/FALKEN_TYR...

Flange protection is a very odd way of saying they are shaped to protect the alloy rim (as most tyres are now), although why they chose that wording is beyond me rofl

I hate it when people spout this pedantic crap. He's not five years old!
Every car on the road is driving on part worn tyres.

OP - Avon's are your friend.

Great grip, decent wear and a very reasonable prices.

They work very well on the Saab and don't make the droning noise that Pilots tend to on these cars.

Changed all four on mine for a shade over £300 when the local tyre fitter was doing a price match and Kwik-Fit had the four for three offer on.

I've always used part worns on my sheds, at £14 a corner fitted I couldn't say no really! Went back for two 'new' fronts recently, and two days later whilst taking a spirited left handed the front right popped clean off the rim! I took it back and he changed it for another one, saying he'd found a problem with the sidewall or something...but now everytime I drive the car I'm worrying it might happen again, so am going to get two brand new tyres fitted to the front!
