Spanish driving is not exactly brilliant its a well known fact but after a two week break driving about 2.5k over there I have come away with three conclusions why they have so many accidents, well four if you also include their tendency to drive absolutely hammered on weekends and fiestas.

Observation 1: they overtake really badly. They come up right behind you about 3-4 metres away and then gradually creep over into the outside lane pass you while nearly taking off your wing mirrors and then pull back in about 1-2 metres in front of you. Almost certainly without being able to see you in their mirrors. All of this while there isn't another car on the road and the maneouvre could be done with them leaving kilomteres os space in front and behind you while pulling out, literally.

Observation 2: while their road are mostly billiard table smooth they do have a tendency to build them without camber or even with adverse camber on some hairy bends or have large sections of their bends rutted and bumpy. Invitations to people with poor car control or just unprepared to lose control.

Observation 3: slipways and junctions give no room for mistakes. I went round a few bends that sharply tightened as slipways. My friends say this is to slow you down. It works but also nearly put me in the barrier the first time. And the slipways are so short too, no room to get up to a matching speed, in fact they expect you to give way, thus entering a motorway at 0kmh. Odd.

So why are they taught to overtake like that and why, if we as part of the EU give them loads of cash to do their road building don't we get to tell them how to safelt build roads?

You missed the 9" drop off the edge of the road 1" past the white line along the edge. I nearly killed the rental Clio by going off the edge during a thunder storm (rental had nearly bald Bridgestones all round, not good in sudden thunder downpour when doing 90kph).

Yeah you're right their road edges just end don't they, no ditches or kerbs, I thought it was a bit odd looking but couldn't place why.
