Hi all,

Its my first post although been on here for a while so go easy.

Right i know there are loads of these posts and ive looked through a few but just wanted some ideas for a second car. Im 21 have nearly 3yrs NCB, no conviction or crashes.

Im looking for a second car, something for the weekend and something thats different from the fabia vRS I use daily. I have around 5K to spend and £1800 a year for insurance. I wont be doing many miles, maybe 3000 max.

Thoughts so far have been, E30 325, VW carrado VR6, E36's, older hot hatches, 200SX, integra etc. Ideally I dont want a hothatch as I might aswell stick with the fabia. I like older cars and anything jap. Please no mx5's,

Insurance is my main concern and would like to hear from similar aged drivers. The last thing a want is to buy a car that I cant insure as happened with the vRS aged 18.

Thanks in advance,

Welcome aboard thumbup

Do you have a garage to keep it in?

Some older cars will deteriorate if kept outside.

Classic insurance is cheap!

Cheers,

A friend who does my servicing etc has a car storage yard for reasonable rates. If not its a cover under the car port.

That's good. How much have you got to spend on the motor?

I use my E30 325 on a daily basis and love it. You would get a tidy example for less than your budget. It would probably feel a bit gutless in the low and midrange compared to your VRS. Great fun though.

I'd have thought you could have got yourself a V8 on a classic policy with limited miles for less than a grand.
I take it you want something that is more or less sorted, rather than something to work on or restore?

I dont mind a bit of tinkering and would't mind a car that isnt the cleanest. Anything with a V8 sounds good to me. Something with more poke than the fabia is a must.

I assume you are aware you can't use your 3 years no claims on a 2nd car?

No I didnt know that actually, thought I would have to have a combined policy. I dont think elephant would be keen on insuring whatever I end up getting. Cheers.

He might take 6k considering advert age, leaves you £800 for insurance. smile

Tax exempt and depreciation proof.

Being of the same age (playstation generation) I love skylines. Ive done a few quotes and can get insured on a S2000 for a shade over 1600 a year, limited mileage. Im going to have a look at a few pre 2001's at the weekend. May well look into the skyline route too.

What age range is classed as classic? There lots of early 90's cars I like and the classic rout maybe the cheapest.

When I was with Elephant they mirrored my everyday car NCB to my weekend toy. They didn't offer till I asked, of course wink

Thanks for the help. Looks like I will have to wait till my 3yrs NCB comes through then change insurers, elephant wont touch me with anything more than my furby. Only a few months. Going to have a look around so im sure what I want.

There's a 1981 Esprit here for £6500. Over purchase budget, but classic insurance will be cheap if you can get it at your age.

Another one here for £5495:
You get the idea.
