I fancy something fun
Discussion
I currently drive a MK5 Fiesta Zetec S which I have owned since I was 17, and to be fair it's been a brilliant car to me. But I'm now 21 and fancy something else to play with. I'm in the process of saving for something special for couple of years time, and so I'm only looking at getting something of similar value so around £1800. The only criteria is it has to be fun. No age restrictions or anything, just something that will put a smile on my face.
Any suggestions?

How about this?

I used to have one back in 2002, lovely car and great fun too!
Though at these prices, they may be money pits

That's probably the best suggestion but an all encompassing hobby.
On the car front MG TFs and MX5s are fairly cheap for quite a lot of fun. You can certainly get a good example of either in that budget, especially towards the end of summer. Just don't feel the need to skimp on tyres or servicing.
Failing that XJ8 or 7 Series?

I like your thinking. Would the drive make up for the limp asthetics?
As a B road blaster they are great. Can be a bit tiresome around town/motorways (especially with Bilsteins) but the ability to drop the top through some windy roads makes up for it. If you get a cheap one you can practice drifting in snow filled car parks over Winter
ETA: You can get Imprezas for this price, but they'll probably be dogs and the servicing costs look horrific. You may be able to get a Focus ST170 for only a bit more. MR2 is also a possibility, even the non-turbo is meant to be pretty good.
Or wait till Friday and buy the SOTW for a laugh.

I used to have an MG Midget for fun and that was the same sort of thing. Hmm there's a couple of tempting options in the classifieds as well.
Any other suggestions?

The MR2 is great fun but the MG handles a lot better and doesn't break every other month. My 1990 '2 went through four grand a year in bills after 80,000 miles, it wasn't so bad before then. Parts are astonishingly expensive (take Lotus and double it) but third party suppliers who can help here. I gather Rev 3 cars are a lot more reliable though.

I've only driven an MX5 relatively slowly so can't comment on the handling. Probably the easiest to run on a budget if you keep an eye on rust. The MG has tricky engine access but DIY is possible.
The TF is very stiff but doesn't know how to understeer while the 'F is much more comfortable on broken surfaces.
Personally I bought the TF and put up with the ride.

You must have had a crap MR2. MR2s are pretty reliable (more so than a MG i would bet!) and they handle better too!I've only driven an MX5 relatively slowly so can't comment on the handling. somthing jap like a civic type r
Now that could be quite fun
My money would go on:
- E30 BMW 318IS or 325i depending on insurance / petrol budget
- Audi coupe - V6 or 20V
- Porsche 944
- Mk2 Golf GTI 16 / Corrado
As these may have the bonus of qualifying for classic insurance and don't cost a fortune to run
more modern suggestions
- Seat Ibiza Cupra 20vt
- Mr2
- clio 172
- 200sx

In first with the MX5 suggestion
Actually considered one but would need to drive one first I think, as I cannot get excited about the looks at all.If you're of the hot hatch persuasion you could get a half decent Clio 172 for that these days and there's also the Peugeot 306 GTi-6/Rallye. May even get a useable 205 GTi.
Given a spot of haggling you'd probably be able to get a Porsche 924S. Cheaper, better looking and faster than a basic 8-valve 944; decent boot space; giant sunroof folds out to make a sort of targa top; not even that expensive to run.
