Idle musing inspired by a local garage...

When my sister stoved her car through a hedge the carcass was collected by the local grease monkey on his homemade car transporter; basically a flatbed tranny with a handmade deck (beavertail style) and leccy winch etc.

I was impressed.

Now i have a thing for buying stuff i really shouldn't, often sans tax and ticket which means added expensse to get them home. So i was looking at cheap long wheel base Luton vans...between my old man and i we decided we could knock up a simple arrangement like the one i mentioned earlier with the main outlays being the van (seen older but solid and lovid Transit Lutons for under 2k) some aluminium chequer plate and a winch. Plus lots of tea.

Was wondering how one goes about insuring these beasties? must be possible, even for homemade jobs (the aformentioned grease monkey was not a pie key btw wink )

Also pondered making it pay for itself, any demand for "man with a car transporter"? Little bit of pocket money at the weekends?

As Clarkson said....how hard can it be???

You need a certificate from a registered bodybuilder these days to get the 'bodytype' changed on the V5 from Luton to Beavertail.

Without that, you're not going to get valid insurance.

I'm not sure how willing a company would be to offer a certificate considering that they don't know the standard of you're work and that essentially, they're doing themselves out of work.

They made certification necessary the change bodytype to try and stop homebuilds.

Believe it or not, I was asked by the DVLA for a VAT registered invoice to prove a change of engine number last year. They're really cracking down now.

I did think this may be the case to be honest. Ah well.
