I've been trying to repair a rust area around the wiper on the wife's Ka. I bought the undercoat, colour and clearcoat from Fords.

Problem is; there is a dark halo around the painted area. Everything is very shiny now that it has been rubbed down and the colour in the centre of the patch matches the rest of the boot. I just have the dark halo on the outside of the painted patch confused

Before you say "get rid", I'd like nothing better!

If the halo is on the edge of the base colour, then you need to fade it out more,
make sure the rattle can is as warm as is comfortable to hold in your bare hand'
apply base colour till primer is fully covered, wait till dry then flat back carefully with 1200 grit.
apply a light coat of base colour to fade the repair out, then laquer as normal.

If the halo is on the edge of the laquer then it sounds like an adhesion problem.
polish (non silicon) large area arround general repair area, flat with 2000 grit,
re-laquer but keep within flated area. polish as normal.

Painting is 99% practice and knowing what you can get away with.

and it's far easier with a gun, rattle cans have no mixture/fan adjustment
