Hey guys, just joined the forum after being a regular Lurker as i need some advice
Ive got a budget of £3.5k
Been looking a mainly VAG cars and have come across a couple of 100k+ milage Audi S3's and Leon Cupra R's.
Found a Nice 137kmiles 1999 S3 for £3200, and a 110kmiles 52 LCR for the same.
The LCR works out at £100 a year more expensive to Insure, and im guessing will be dearer to Tax as its post 2001. Both are mapped to 260ish.
Im worried that the S3 could potentially have big repair bills due to haldex failures etc, and would cost more to service.
Which would you recommend?

I'll second that.
When looking for mine I bought what was the cheapest 'R' around at the time. Paid £3700, 88k on the clock, full Seat/VW history, had had lots of work done recently just needed a cambelt and some cosmetic tidying. They have dropped a little more now so your budget should get you a good car if you look around, I did have to travel to get mine but I love it. Just beware of earlier cupra's made to look like LCR's

Owned both. Had an S3 back in 2003/2004 which I replaced in 2005 with an 05 Cupra R. Actually bought a second S3 a few years later.
In short...
S3 - has a four ringed badge (if that floats your boat), well built, refined, solid interior, fairly quick, good grip. More costly to service than the SEAT.
LCR - ok, so it is a SEAT but that didn't deter me as I went from the Audi to the SEAT. They are better handling, they are slightly quicker and they stop a LOT better with the Brembos. In short, it's a front wheel drive S3 which initially cost less from the factory. Oh, and it has five doors.
Which to choose?
If you need five doors and something cheap(ish) to run and drive quickly, the LCR.
If you fancy something refined but sporty, which has a bit of prestige, go for the S3.
The LCR was one of the best all-round cars I have owned and I regretted selling it on (sold it after hankering for a Mk1 Focus RS - bad decision!) Having said that, the missus much preferred the S3, hence why we bought a second one a few years later.
Drive both!
