Afternoon all. Advertising a car on Gumtree and I receive this response.
Scammer said:
Hello,
Thanks for the quick response, there is no doubt about it, i like the vehicle and ready for the immediate purchase... have actually tried to get this vehicle here earlier from here but most of the ones I got either have one huge mechanical fault or the other and some have even had accidents in the past while some are extremely exorbitant.I am pleased with your price but I want you to get back to me with pictures and all dents on the vehicle if there are any because i am not local. I am presently in Malaysia on business and could not come over to check it out,but no worries as i am willing to handle the pick up of this vehicle through a legitimate shipping agent that has their headquarter situated in Malaysia, it will be picked up after payment,i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.co.uk and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I'd like to know certain things too...

Are you the first owner of the vehicle,
Does the vehicle have any mechanical disabilities presently?
What is your reason for selling it?
I'm sorry, just want to be sure about the sale before i proceed.
Nothing suspicious there, eh? And with a stroke of good fortune I'll be able to deliver the car to them, here's my reply...

Hi there
I can't believe my good fortune-the car will actually not be available for a few weeks as I am using it to take part in a charity fund raising drive to-Malaysia! What are the chances of that? The plan was to drive there and drive back and then sell the cars with all proceeds going to a charity close to my heart, Terminal Nymphomania Research.

This is charity that means a lot to me since my late wife died from a combination of Terminal Nymphomania and an axe wound to the head.

This amazing stroke of good fortune means I would be able to deliver the car to you in person and collect the cash, you would obviously get the full receipt and the chance to get your photo taken for the charity newsletter, Charity United for Nymphomania Terminal reSearch, or S for short. I am very flexible with my travel arangements so let me know where and when in Malaysia suits.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to working with you to raise awareness of S

As soon as they get a reply they'll send another badly worded email, usually ignoring anything you have said.

This.

If you feel inclined, set up a dummy paypal account and play along. Just waste as much if their time as you possibly can.

I set up my paypal account years ago. A while after I set it up they tried to get me to link it to my bank account which I refused. They still nag me every now and then but like hell am I going to.

As far as I'm aware, these long standing PP accounts cannot just pull money from your CC, they can only do that with linked bank accounts. (I haven't authorised the payment so can get the CC company to reverse it from PayPal)

Do they insist all new accounts are bank linked now?

Hmm, it'd be fun if one of these scammers actually had an address in the UK - you could open a bank account in *their* name & address, create a PP account linked to that bank account, let them do their scam and sit back in the knowledge the bank would be after them for the clawed back £10k or whatever.

I have had many variations on this scam when trying to sell my car recently. How do they work? Do they overpay into the paypal account and then get you to pay the balance to the shipper by some method that can't be reversed (unlike paypal) ?

They should spot your wind-up as soon as you said your wife died of terminal nymphomania. As any man knows, women stop wanting sex as soon as they get married....
