I know I know, there are many other M cars that might be considered, but I have only owned these two, and was just day dreaming about the good old days, after answering the PH events attended thread.

If I had the money to keep one, park it in a dry garage with a sheet over it for 30 years which one should it have been?

Just to remind you these were my own old cars. To be honest the photography helps the Z4 MC more than the M5.

Z4MC easily. Far rarer base car it is based on, and far fewer Z4Ms than E39 M5s were made.

I went for the M5 as its pretty much best in its class during its period. The Z4M for me has too many competitors in its sector.

IMO of course

The E39 M5 might have been a more significant car in its days, but in the end it is a 1.8 tonne saloon car and although I can see the bhp race will end or even become a reverse trend, I don't think the world will be bereft of big, fast, f**k off saloons any time soon while the sports car as we know it - lean, pared back to its essentials in order to place the driver at the centre of proceedings and fully in charge of his/her destiny - might become a thing of the past. So if you ask me what car to put away for a future generation, it will always be a sports car rather than a fast saloon/estate.

Of these 2 I think the E39 M5, but I believe the Z3M Coupe will become more of a classic than either of these 2.

Well said.

I should also clarify my own mixed up opinion.

I really can't make up my mind hence the thread.

I think the M5 is better classic, because it has broader appeal, it is lovely and subtle, a nicer all round drive, and was leagues ahead of its competition in it day.

On the other hand I thing the Z4MC is the better classic, because it looks so stunning, gets the pulse racing that much more, and was produced in such small numbers.

Hmmmmmm!

Not sure I'd go for either for investment potential, but if I did it'd be the M5.

The Z4M is way more my kind of car and if it was a straightforward purchase I'd always go for the coupe, but I reckon the M5 is the greater icon. In its earlier forms it was one of the original super saloons and I reckon that distinguishes it from the masses of executive cars more than the Z4M's qualities separate it from the likes of the Cayman and the 350/370Z.

Let me put it another way: Z1 or E30 M3?

Both are desirable but the Z1 edges it. M3's are accumulating value fast though... close call but I'd keep a Z4 coupé as my rugrats' inheritance.

While we are talking neither, I'd plump for a Z8.

Agreed. The e39 M5 is more iconic IMO and stood head and shoulders above the compeition until the day it went out of production.
Even now it's still called upon in 'ultimate sports saloon' comparisons.

E39's will just get rarer and rarer and cheaper and cheaper for years upon years ...... and then suddenly will times their price by 3.

Just look at the E28 M5's a good one goes for well over 10K.

E34 M5's are bottoming out ( one went on eBay yesterday for 2k !)

E39's will start coming down in price rapidly in about 4 years.

So to conclude I would take my personal preferance of an M5 as you just can't beat the prestige and the "M5" badge on the boot after 2 great examples before it.

I think most M cars will be (in the relative sense of the word) "great future classics".....

M5 for me. More of an icon than the Z4. I may be proved wrong!

The E39 for me.

It's now perceived as a better car than its successor (as an all-rounder and fitness for purpose - the E60 M5 is an utter weapon, but perhaps not an exec bruiser), which can only help residuals.

Z4M doesn't HAVE a direct successor (which will help), but it will always be compared to the E46 M3, which by all accounts is a slightly better drive.

yes Although M3s may be too common (especially the convertibles).

I think the issue here is that the m5 will be seen as the definitive v8 super saloon. I love the z4m but the e46 m3 is more iconic to those growing up at the time, the z4 is seen as a hairdressers car, the engine which defines it against the z4 3.0 was used elsewhere (including the 'first wild car' z3m), and the purists keep telling us the boxster is better. I'd have the z4m though!

The Z4 coupé doesn't seem to have the same hairdresser tag as the roadster though.
