Hello all

Currently have a 2.2 Astra Coupe which I've had for a year and just insured and taxed it for another year. It does about 30mpg and costs me £600 to insure and £260 a year to tax. Just had a large-ish service with two tyres which cost £600. Not the most economical considering its not THAT sporty but do like the looks.

I'm thinking of getting rid in 10 months when my policy is up, going to budget myself £3000 (so imagine cars with a value of around £3.5k to £4k in todays values) which must do better in running costs than the current coupe. Ideally looking for 40mpg but relatively nippy and fun to drive, cheaper to fix and must be an "interesting" car to look at, perhaps a warmer version of a hatch/coupe/saloon... not too bothered on size.

A 2004 ish Fiesta Zetec S would be along the right lines with the right kit on it, not quiiiiteee in budget right now for a nice one but in 10 months probably will be. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Haha MX5 insurance is still ridiculous, more than I'd be paying on the Coupe. I imagine the MR2 idea etc. might be the same too. I also forgot to mention I do a lot of mountain biking so needs to be rack fittable.

Insurance is going to be the big killer for me- just bought a house with the boyfriend and I'm paying all bills and food every month so saving will be tricky. A Zetec S would bring ins. costs down to £500ish a year....

A Fabia VRS will get 40mpg+ or an Ibiza/Leon Cupra will get 35mpg ish (on a run, if you are careful etc.), they are both a bit older than the Fiesta so there is always the chance they might need some work in the near future. I think finding something sporty AND cheaper to fix than a Vauxhall will be difficult, they aren't that unreliable and parts are cheaper than most German/Japanese stuff.

You might get a Peugeot 207 GT, they are around £5k now, but they might be just over budget in 10 months.

Ford puma, good ones are well within budget. Fun to drive, cheap to fix and nigh on 40mpg. Just watch out for rust.

For that money I'd be going for an E36 328i personally, but you can't really go wrong with a Mk3 MR2 or an MX5.

All great suggestions but unfortunately being let down by insurance. A mk3 MR2 for £700 lowest on comparison sites, with an MX5 being £670. Think I might have to look at something more "normal".

Having said that, the 140 Celica got a quote for £590, and the 190 around £620.
