Hi, I love looking for a new car... and have had about 25 different cars in 12 years.

My current car is a 06 330d M-sport touring Auto, which i love and has just moved past the 6 month marker where i usually get bored and start looking for something else. I do around 20k a year and absolutely love this car... its fantastic and supprisingly i dont have the itch to trade it in smile

Now here is the dilema, since our first child has been born (8 weeks old) my wife keeps borrowing the 330d as her fabia vrs has too small a boot for the buggy etc... and although the vrs is a GREAT car and has the power its not really a great car for motorway crusing.

So i need to replace it but with what???

I have £10k ish to spend and im faced with getting something for the mrs which is a bit bigger or something for me... If it is going to be for me it needs to be better than the 330d but just as powerful and return 35-40mpg. Also i dont really fancy another auto as i like manual cars and dont want to be lazy.

So do i get something for me of the mrs?
Is the 330d the best i can get for my needs... or is there something better?

Cheers

Welcome to PH. wavey

If you still enjoy your car and don't feel the need to trade in at the moment then just get something for the wife.

Something like this may suit the bill?

It is like the Skoda Fabia but bigger. smile

That is on the list and the wife likes these alot... plus its got 170bhp for when i need to use it biggrin

Did all the new 2.0tdi range from VAG group use a DPF as i have heard these are a weak point and a fairly common issue.

Seems like a simple question - New car for me or the Mrs?

Get a car, get rid of the Mrs.

Smaller buggy... we purposely got the one which was the smallest once it was collapsed. The problem is they all seem too wide (ours) or too long.

Our is too wide so a wheel always needs to be taken off to get it in the boot.

How's about a B6 Passat?

I had one and could get the pushchair, lengthways, in to the boot - if it's for the Mrs, you probably don't need a fast one, so I'd look at the 2.0tdi 140bhp diesel (in SE or SEL spec - sport might be too hard, and the S isn't spec enough).

The 1.9tdi is ok, but only has 105bhp and a 5speed box.

Not expensive either - early ones didn't have a DPF too.

Edit - I suspect that the badge isn't an issue, so hows about an Octavia. VRS if it needs to be the quick one - is the VRS diesel at £10k these days?

Skoda Octavia VRS TDI for fuel economy if you want it, petrol if not.

The Mrs although she wont admit it actually likes top of the range fast cars and hates fleet cars so a low spec passat, mondeo, octavia or A4 are out of the question.

She loves the Oct VRS, but considering we want something to last another 3 years its very hard to find a low miler diesel... there are plenty of petrol versions which we have looked at recently but afterwards i then start thinking why not a GTi or Cupra instead of a Skoda. But against the Fabia VRS they are nowhere near as cheap to tax, insure, run etc... so i suppose a good question is what is a good replacement for the FABVRS?

Well...

  • The VAG 2.0 TFSI engines are generally £245 to tax
  • Anything with this engine will be more to insure
  • Fuel, very dependant on the type of trips you take (for me its 25-40mpg)
  • Service, if its a VW, then £350 for the two year service pack
  • Tyres, at least £100 each
Plenty of good examples around, prices start around here http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3172098.htm (although I imagine you need 5 doors) or at the top of your budget http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3010207.htm

Yep 4 doors please.

Volkswizard are a good bunch, enquired about a car a while ago and were very honest about its condition and anything needed to be done in the next year or will be done prior to delivery

Sure, I removed the Volkswizard example because after I read the text a second time, it's actually an import car (which you may or may not be sensitive about).

Did all the new 2.0tdi range from VAG group use a DPF as i have heard these are a weak point and a fairly common issue.
The DPF is only really an issue on those cars that do little mileage and are primarily used for short town runs thus not letting the car get hot for long enough for the DPF re-gen to take place.
We have an 08 Tdi FR that now has 42k on it and have had no DPF issues at all, though the injector looms are a known weak spot - we had one replaced under warranty last year.
For reference to the one above, we bought ours in 2009 at 10 months old, 8500 miles on the clock and from a main dealer for £12'500 so I'd say that one is a little expensive. The interiors wear very well though the plastics aren't the nicest. Comfy, but hte sports suspension can be a little hard and jarring at times.
