Purchased my first ever proper tool box but i need to create more custom sections/dividers. Had a good look and can't find anything, either it's some overpriced item in the states or it's cheap & flimsy.

Anyone done something similar? maybe using something that wasn't designed for metal tool boxes but worked?

Thanks.

Get some thin steel (car doorskins are ideal) and cut them to shape. Either weld them in, or drill and pop-rivet. Jobs done.

Cheers,

Riveting would be a problem, the underside would catch on the below draws when closing. Welding is also out of the question unfortunately. I don't have many tools to get too creative. :P.

Are there any strong adhesives for metal that would take the odd 'knocking' if tools where to slide about? Could then fashion a similar L shaped piece of metal that comes as standard in the boxes (only has 2 tho as seen in the pic in the top drawer) & i could glue the bottom of the 'L' to the box.

Whack a bit of araldite in there, that should do the trick - it's pretty strong stuff once it cures.

Rivet it from underneath, into the drawers. Those cantilever type toolboxes lift the drawers as you close them, so there is probably enough clearance.

The epoxy i'm guessing? If so, does it matter which form as they do quite a few.

Buy some cheap plastic kitchen drawer dividers and cut to fit. Donations for the idea welcome!

hehe Thanks, i was looking everywhere and the drawer dividers either seemed too flimsy or they were for a specific model.

Halford's solutionI have no idea what you're meant to do with the parts...

rivet it sideways?

ie make a squared off C shape, slot in, move to position and rivet (or glue...)

Sorry, don't know what you mean. I'm trying to visualize but can't. smile

[Edit] I do now know what you mean. That could work actually. I'd prefer to glue but i'll probably do this.

Thanks

I think it would catch on the underside as it's paper thin when the drawers close upon one another.

That moment of clarity!

The first thing I thought of was riveting it to the walls, not the floor, if only for strength reasons.

Now that's thinking outside of the box (for at least 50% of it anyway)

Lol. biggrin

Well i've just found some araldite and i've tested a piece of metal just to get an idea of how strong it'll be. If all goes well i'll then get to the metal dividers.

The araldite is nice & set & rock solid, definitely will work for this.

Now for the dividers themselves, i don't have many cutting facilities apart from a hacksaw, so would want something that was of similar size already to save the amount of cutting required. The width will be 9cm for the drawers so i'm sure i'll find some strips i can just bend into shape.

Make sure they are in the place you want them before glueing, as any changes after glueing will be difficult and untidy.

I'd probably try strong double-sided tape for a while to ensure you are happy with the positions............

Good idea, smile

Also with socket rails will a cheap rail do the job on just keeping them altogether?
