So I've managed to get myself another set of wheels for the Maserati and plan to keep Goodyear f1s on for the summer (whenever that is) and winter tyres for when it's <5 deg. So my question is given there's some time before winter where is reccomended to get some from? is Europe cheaper? Who is reliable? I guess I'd be going for more brand name tyres rather than budget ones!
Thoughts?

Look in your handbook, it seems you should go slightly narrower on WT. Europe is/WAS cheap (back in June, early bird 'n'all that).Thoughts?

The UK is far better prepared this year compared to last year regarding stock levels of WTs. Buy them early anyway, they'll be cheaper. Oh, and they're not too great under 4mm so there's no point buying used on eBay

Sort of......It's been a few years since I've had a set and a good few more years again since I've planned to run a RWD car thro the winter (last few years the winter hack has been FWD with not very wide tyres).
I'm inclined to just get a new set of good tyres for the daily as it could do with a couple shortly especially as my normal preference would be to have a spare set of wheels/tyres for the winter and for the new (to me daily) I have just the set it came with

king cold out there and all, you can hardly call it the height of summer! I thought about them for the E34, then I remembered, my E34 got me everywhere in the snow without crashing or getting stuck, hell I even traversed several steep hills up and down without needing a push, think I will just stick with my boggo standard tyres that are on there......
The E39 on the other hand, that may get a set of winters, but then again I did manage to drive that up a very wet and muddy hill the other day with only a tiny bit of slip from the quite low almost need replacing tyres on the rear.

That's exactly what it's about, even my Z4 was taking me everywhere last winter, to the point that one of my neighbours actually asked me how I was managing, probably because someone else's E60 couldn't even get up the incline out of our street Try www.mytyres.co.uk
Although it's a UK website, I believe they're based in Germany and consequently are very competitive.
I got a pair of the highly rated Maloya Davos winter tyres for £48 each with free delivery, just last week. Since then however, they've crept up to £53 each.

Tried to buy all season tyres, but stocks almost non existent. Finally found some at MyTyres but they cancelled my order as I paid by credit card and the 'order was for quite a lot"!!! £570 WTF!?
Ended up with decent 'summer tyres' from blackcircles.
Until they make all season tyres easy and cheap to buy, very few will bother. Cheaper to take the few days of really bad snow off work and have family time

To work out whether I should change tyres, I did a sum!
Let X = downside of using winter tyres all year: bit squirmy on hot days at high speed
Let Y = downside of using summer tyres all year: get stuck at home in snowy weather, increase risk of crashing on icy roads
For me, X < Y, so the winter tyres stay on. And for this car (elderly 528i), they are the tyres which will be fitted from here onward.

They're a bit softer riding, so the waft-factor is increased a little bit. They don't noticeably wear more in warm weather, either. Not that I give a monkey's about that in a car that does 7K a year tops.
