Guess what? Another what car! £1000.
Discussion
So just to help keep the Forum fresh and exciting I thought I would post another what car.
A mate has just sold his car in order to fund his new house. He needs something to get him through the next 6 months to a year and only has £1000 to spend. I have suggested various SOTW options but I am told I am stupid. Here are his criteria;
- £1000 or less
- Reliable and less than 100k on the clock
- Relatively cheap to run and insure
- As fun as possible
- Interesting!
Interested to see what you guys come up with.
N.B. I have suggested a MKI MX5 but apparently they are too expensive to run and insure, so that knocks out a good 60% of the Forum's usual suggestions...
Thanks

Nowt to run, and average to Insure IMHO
Depends where you live, soft tops are a deal-breaker if your postcode isn't the insurer's favourite.Nowt to run, and average to Insure IMHO
Can't believe someone suggested a Ka on here, thought I'd never see the day!
A grand will just about find you a decent B5 A4, and that does nicely. Mine's cost next to nothing in the past year and a half.
ETA - Finding something fun, interesting, reliable, low miles and cheap to run and insure for under a grand really is pushing your luck, but could always have a look at stuff like this E39.

What the hell is the problem with 100k?
Is your friend saying that he would be happy with a car showing 99999 but not 100000?
This doesnt make sense to me, never has and never will.
An older car with very low miles most likely will give you more trouble than a high miler or average miler, cars that just bumble around doing nothing are occasionally a pain in the butt.

Ford KA or Puma, though I think you'll struggle to get anything in that bracket with under 100k miles and "reliable"
I suggested the Puma too. There are some good ones about for around £1k but I'm not sure he likes them is all. The KA is actually a great car, I drove my sister's a few times, feels like an old mini! Shame it is proper girly car!

It's not a case of it being 1 mile under 100k I think he is just nervous that a car that has done 100k may need a fair bit of tinkering IF not propertly looked after, maybe it isn't something to worry about as a run about but I think it is a reasonable requirement. KAs are a PH dirty little secret. You won't find a more fun small car! Too bad you look like a massive girl driving one.
te old Mk3 Fiesta engine they still used - and found it pretty uninspiring. Couldn't quite get over the horrid cheapness of it all, or the way I'd look afterwards if I happened to crash it.To be fair to the chassis, though, I've also tried a SportKa and that, while still being very nasty in some ways, handled nicely, rode quite well, sounded decent and had a very nice gearchange.
It also cost three times as much as my Audi, though

Slightly more on topic, the mileage thing completely depends. I mean, if ee were looking at Kas that have been driven around town by girls, a 100k-miler is a catagorical no-no. On the other hand, a big-engined motorway cruiser that's had a new clutch? 100k is no problem at all. It's all about the wear sustained versus what it was designed for, not the actual number.

My Corrado cost me 1050, wouldn't call it reliable or under 100k.
My recommendation for ultra cheap (read crap) motoring. 1.1 Citroen Saxo. Can be picked up for sub £300 for an alright one.
We've had trouble shifting a sub 50k miles, t reg one though, priced stupidly low and still no-one wants it, so if you want dirt cheap then there you go.
Mk4/Mk5 fiesta's can be had quite cheap, the 1.25 is nippy enough, 1.4 a comparative powerhouse! or you can go nasty 1.8 non turbo derv.

For £1000 just buy on condition. The chances of finding a low mileage car with a FSH for £1000 is slim, so there is no way of knowing if it has been clocked or not. I would rather have an honest car showing 130k with some history than one with 'only' 50k and little paperwork. Plus, it isn't just milage that causes wear and tear; age is a factor too. Therefore, when on a tight budget buy something cheap to fix............ no £1000 luxo barges. DazBock said:

I have had a range of cars with diverse histories and mileages. Some of the best ones i have had had no history and high mileages, two of the worst cars i ever had had low mileages and full comprehensive histories including receipts etc and both of those were shockingly unreliable, one was a BMW and one was a TDi Bora, both supposedly very reliable cars.
It isnt as easy as posting on here and getting an uber reliable cheap, fun car. Buy one with someone who knows what to look for and hope for the best. There is some major junk out there for that price but also some gems.
