Yes, Its a what car thread, but with a twist.

Currently thinking of joinign a new race series thats starting up. A kind of a Budget Car Series. Cheap as possible. i.e Up to £1500 for a car. MAX.

The regulations dictate that the car must be:

Manufactured between 1991 - 2004
N/A Only up to 3500cc
No Engine Conversions.
Car must retain original engine & gearbox layout

Engines up to 1800cc limited to 110bhp/litre
Engines up to 2200cc limited to 100bhp/litre
Engines over 2200cc limited to 80bhp/litre
Engines over 2500cc limited to 70bhp/litre

2WD cars only

So far been thinking along the lines of a 306 GTi-6, had one before, great cars, can only get better stripped and caged. But the rules allow for DC2 Integras, which would render the 306 not much competition.

Also thought of an Accord Type R, but even the cheapest ones are above the budget.

An alternative would be 106 GTi/VTS Saxo?

Anyone have any recommendations that im overlooking?

Cheers,

Mark

Late Mk2 Golf GTi 16v? Or Mk2 Ibiza 2.0 16v.

Sounds an interesting series!

I doubt they'd be as competitive as id like.

Theyre only around 150bhp. Theyd never be able to compete with the likes of a DC2.

Is £1500 your budget or the budget for the race series?

Are you expecting a fully built race car for £1500?

You'll have very little choice at that money, my E30 320 built to tight regs for the production BMW championship has had about £7-8k spend on building it up from £150 donor car.

Its my budget. its slightly flexible, dependant on the vehicle. But wouldnt be willing to go much over this for a car that hasnt had any preparations like a cage, harnesses, seats etc

No £1500 would be for car not prepared yet.

In this class, its not MSA approved or that. So the regs from a safety point of view are

4 Point Harnesses
6 Point Cage min
Fixed Back Seat
Fire Extinguisher

Polycarb Windows are recommended

Is this normal!?

Doesn't sound right...

1.8 = 198bhp
2.2 = 220bhp
2.4 = 192bhp
2.5 = 175bhp

In other words, your best bet is a Saxo VTS with a set of cams and strip it.

I know it doesn't answer your question but unless you really want to build it yourself I'd buy a previously built car

The E30 I bought with receipts for £7-8k cost me £4250 having never been raced, It's surprising how quickly all the little bits add up.

In answer to your original question I guess a 205 gti or clio 172 could be a good place to start looking.

Would an e36 325i fit the bill?

Engine power is near the top allowed for that range, and should be more torquey than the DC2 Integras.

I realise it's a bit heavier as standard, but it's probably got a bit more weight loss potential when you strip it out.

edited as i read the OP wrong!!

is the cc limit the category of classes or is it just one class for all engine cc?

if theres diferent classes a decent place to start is deciding what class you want to fit in, then get a car around that??

When I was interested in racing, I was told i'd need to budget £2000 for the safety gear alone....

Helmet, fire extinguishers, roll-cage, safety cut-outs, the list is a mile long and these things don't come fitted as standard.

Yeah, its only a cheap, buget series. No major thing. I thinking of it from a fun kinda basis, nothing too serious, although i do want a car kinda competitive smile

I also forgot to add. The only modifications allowed are

Air Filter
Exhaust from manifold back
& ECU tweeks (ie Remap)

I have Personal Safety Gear. Which already is a chunk of money i dont need to spend.

The £1500 is maximum budget for a STD car, although the cheaper the better.

Still keep coming back to 306's as they can be had for not much, and i know may way around them well.

If you can't find an Accord Type R for the budget how are you expecting to find a DC2? They are more expensive by some margin.

looks like you've answered your own question there for me.

i dont see the point of getting a motor your not 100% sure of if you need to work on it, it may cost more than your original budget to get anything done that you cant do yourself/sure about.

Citroen VTS would be my choice.

Quicker than the Peugeot and lighter so easier on brakes and tyres.
