What you do if you had 5K to spend on a BMW Convertible..?

a late BMW E36 Convertible 328 in excellant condition for around the 3k mark.....

or

...pay up to the max 5k on a early E46 convertible avoiding the 318 or 320 models...

I like both models and seen examples of both which i wouldn't mind owning..!

I'd rather buy at the top of the E36 market than the bottom of the E46 market with that kind of money personally. If something goes wrong you'll have some margin for repairs, where as if you stump up all £5k on the car at the outset...

I'd go E36 328.

I would much rather have a good E36 than an average E46..

Would a E46 hold its money better?

An e46 will depreciate a lot more than a tidy e36.
