Just heard from my next door neighbour that the cat has been stolen (sawn off) from his Shogun. The car was parked on his drive and they were in when it happened.

According to the police it's happening quite a bit.

What are these things worth?

As much as that?

It'll cost many times that to get it repaired no doubt.

£10 to £60 at your local scrappy.

A secure site in Wisbech had ten cats removed from vehilces one night last week. A van turned up, the driver waved to the security officer on duty (Reliance) who let the van in. About ten minutes later the van left and nobody knew vehicles had been tampered with until the end of the night shift and people started trying to leave.

Local dealership had four cats taken from their forecourt on Thursday night. They especially like 4x4s because there is lot of clearance to get in, undo, nick and out & because the cats on those tend to be slightly bigger.

Beware, this crime is only going to get more common.

With so many thefts do to the value of preciouos metals, Why the fk aren't scrap dealers asking for proof of ID and a log of what was dropped off?

It's just taking the absolutely piss now.

I was at a Indy 4x4 dealer last year who had about a dozen stolen in one night from a locked compound. They reckoned they had used a battery powered grinder to cut through the exhaust either end. Supposedly about £1,200 damage per vehicle for a new cat and exhaust sections.

About £50 scrap value or £100 if they can be bothered to unbolt the exhaust cut-offs and stick on ebay, so £600 for an hour’s work.

Strangely all this happened whilst a group of travellers had moved in nearby. You would have though that with all these extra people about, someone would have heard this and called the police!

LOL!

So they're going armed with a battery grinder and something with two metal wires, 4 metal bolts and a couple of metal panels is going to stop them?

I think not.

We might see quite a few of these appearing on EBay with new bolts though smile

Exactly my point. Locally we've had st loads of stuff going missing, the police are apparently powerless to do anything, but the scrap merchants are quite happy to peddle on the stolen goods.

Take a name and ID or get done for handling stolen goods. Simple.

We had a trauma call come into resus about 6 months ago. Bloke was under a van trying to steal a catalytic converter, unfortunately for him the owner came out started the van and began driving away dragging the thief a couple of hundred metres down the road.

Iirc, he (only) suffered a broken leg and broken arm. Better luck next time.

Exactly, scrap dealer make money out of stolen goods, the onus should be on them to provide proper records and to record the vehicle IDs of cars/vans entering the site and doing business there.

Most scrap metal dealers are decendants off the dim boy off Dad's Army, as are the people who nick these things!
