During our winter periods, cold, wet, occasional snow, ice

Would cheap winter tyres be better than summer

Anyone heard of sunny, rockstone, wanli, fortuna etc?

Never skimp on brakes and tyres. Unless you plan on changing your car soon you will not be using any more rubber - 2 sets of tyres will last twice as long. Assuming you run both sets until they are worn out, the only expense is a spare set of wheels (which you can sell).

I think the biggest problem with cheap winter tyres is their performance when it's not snowing, which in the UK winter is quite often. I decided to go for decent ones because driving on wet winter roads is far more common. On just snow the cheap winters will likely be better than decent summer tyres.
