Driving home last night down the M1 and something hit the offside headlight and broke the glass completely, no damage at all to the surrounding area just a broken headlight lens. It was the OH's Mk4 Golf I was in and I will be taking into Nottingham VW this afternoon. Total cost - £190 which includes fitting.
Out of curiosty I looked into how much a new headlight unit would have been if it had been my car (E46 BMW) - £340 without fitting. I admit this was from a main dealer.

In a funny way I'm glad I was in the Golf.

You know you could save a huge amount by buying from a scrappy and fitting it yourself don't you?

yes or from ebay. Any idiot can replace a headlight, couple of screws and job done.

I wouldn't be paying main dealer rates to swap the headlamp on a Mk4 Golf.

I haven't the time. I work away. I can't be bothered. The unit is totally exposed to the elements and the car is in daily use - I've made the decision to use the lazy mans route.
