Hi,

I’ve just bought a Z4M Roadster which I plan to run (enjoy) throughout the winter. The tyres are fairly low so I’ll be replacing them soon. So what should I go for? It’s a bit of a handful in the wet at the moment but I’m assuming that’s down to lack of tread! So, I’m deciding what to go for in terms of tyres.

It’s obviously too early for winter tyres as it’s still warm, despite all this rain. So what would you do? Buy a new set of all season tyres now and put winters on in November? Is there a difference between all season and summer tyres?

I’d be grateful for any help you may have. Think the tyre are 255/40 ZR18 and 224/45 ZR18.

Thanks,

Dan

To be honest I wouldn't use all season tyres on a car that you want to 'drive', they tend to be a compromised jack of all traded and master if none tyre IMHO. We've all season on the family SUV and they are fine for that type of car/driving, on my car I run summer tyres to get the performance for 3/4 of the year and then switch to winters when it gets cold.

But it all depends on what type of driving experience you want.

I'd go for something like the Vredstein Wintrac Xtreme - when I ran them on my Lancer, they were better in summer than the Toyo T1R tyres I had on my summer rims. They didn't wear significantly either, I think I got 8k out of them on the front and they still had the winter sipes on them, and that was getting wrung to death by a 170hp VW PD TDI.

I have falkens on mine. I am too scared to drive the Z4M in the snow after last winter...nearly killed myself due to my stupidity!

The car is a weekend and evening car so will be driven as the M Power department intended!

So, would you recommend I get the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA now, run them for a month or so and then switch to their winter tyre?

Yes, that's what I would do.

Put a set of winters on now and replace with summers in March.

My personal choice would be Dunlop Winter Sport 3D which are available in your sizes and score really well in tests and for summer I'd stick on a set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta which are good value and have superb dry grip. If you want one tyre for all seasons, I'd avoid actual all-season tyres as they will feel a bit soft on a Z4M and fit four Uniroyal Rainsport2.

What if we have a warm September like we have had previously? Would it wreck the winter tyres? Having said that, I'm working away until the 26th September anyway!! Maybe that's the best bet. I'll look into the Dunlops.

Should I be using the same size for winter? Can't find many in the right size.

Why waste money on all the wheels, tyres and put up with the hassle of changing wheels and storage? UK climate isn't too challenging for car tyres.

One decent set should have you nicely covered IMO. After all, if you lived on a mountaintop you'd probably be in an X3 not a Z4!

Another vote for the Vredestein wintrak extreme. We ran them for 8 months on the TT and they were showing no signs of wear.

It is a myth that they wear fast (unless you live in death valley).

I do want decent tyres, as I've spent a lot on the car! I don't need snow tyres. I live on the south coast so don't really see much snow. I just want something that will hande the wet roads. Storage isn't a problem as family have a couple of large garages I can put them in.

I'm thinking of sticking to the current tyres for a month, as it will have very little use, and then fit winter tyres in a month or so. Anymore suggestions for a particular brand of winter tyre?

Nokian WR A3.

They replaced the much loved Nokian WRG2 so should be a little better in every way.

The Nokian WRG2 was a "slush optimised" tyre, and has a little more dry / wet bias than the more extreme winter tyres. This means you get a little bit more dry / wet performance without really losing any noticeable snow performance for the few days of snow a year we get.

That said, if you're not going to be using the car in the snow and live on the south coast, a soft compound summer tyre designed for rain might be a better choice.

Nah, they'll be fine. I managed to melt a set of Michelin winters on a fully loaded Chrysler Voyager driving at 100mph on a French autoroute in 30 degrees C, but September in England will not pose a problem.

That's good news, as I've just ordered these for the Jaaaaaaag;

(Noticed that they've gone up by £10 each since I ordered them though!)

Anyone used these guys? http://www.oponeo.co.uk/

They're based in Poland but offer free UK delivery. They seem quite a lot cheaper than anyone else online.

EDIT: Forget that, My Tyres are cheaper!
