I do love the guys that sit on single carriageway roads, at 5-10 mph below the speed limit, then when you overtake, perfectly safely, then feel compelled to flash their main beams at you, repeatedly, whilst increasing their speed to sit so close to your rear bumper you can feel the texture of their beards on the back of your neck....still repeatedly flashing their lights.

I assume the repeated flashing of lights is a congratulatory message, recognising a perfect and beautful overtaking manoeuvre. Or maybe congratulating me on an excellent choice of car?

These creatures are at least decent enough to drive an obvious 'Reginald Molehusband' car. Hondas/Rovers/Lesser Jags/Small Jap Sh*t-Boxes etc.

I've found this recently. Never understood why, I could understand if it was a dodgy overtake, but they never are. Must be a man thing, never noticed a women do it.

Never had this happen to me in nearly 30 years of driving. Maybe you are sitting too close to them before overtaking and this is what is annoying them.

I never get this either. You joke about it OP, but maybe there is something in the manner in which you overtake that annoys people? I've been driving for ten years, and never once had this happen.
Ah but you don't live in the south east

I drove to Norfolk on Friday and back yesterday. I did quite a lot of overtaking and didn't get flashed once. Nobody tried to speed up on me either.

This behaviour is a result of the 'ME, ME, ME' attitude of the vast majority of drivers on UK roads. They can't stand being passed. You'll find the same driver sitting in the middle or outside lane of most motorways up and down the country.

I've been flashed a fair bit on overtaking, seems to vary in different parts of the country. A lot of the time I think it's just people letting you know you're good to pull back in.

There are some nutters out there though.

Neither do you?

Are people there a bit special or something?
Well they do believe they are the center of the known universe

I found the thread title a bit misleading and am disappointed upon entry.

This subject has been done to death now though. Personally, had it once, but it was fair enough as I was a little ragged in my overtake. Had it a couple of times from people in the distance coming towards me.

I get it fairly often; I imagine that it's because I'm driving something with more grunt than a rutting sperm whale that I can overtake in what Mister Sad tt in his Galaxy cannot think is a safe gap? Or because it's a manoeuvre they cannot manage? Or because it's "pushing in"? Or because they a miserable s? I don't know. There's nothing wrong with my overtakes that has caused my passengers to remark on them.

I derive great amusement when women do this - watch carefully and you'll see the wipers flapping about, the washers going and eventually, when you're half a mile down the road there will be a plaintive flashing in the distance biggrin

I've had this a few times, never out in the sticks though, always nearer the city.

No idea why they do it, I'm just grateful I don't have to live with them.

I did get flashed by someone who I overtook in a tunnel in the Tuscan the other day (dual carriage way). He had his window down and was about to take a sip of coffee as I went past.

Before the regulars start laying into the OP, this has happened to me a few times before after performing perfectly safe and considerate overtakes. I guess some people take issue with being overtaken. Having said that, the drivers that annoy me the most are the ones that sit tight to the bumper of the car in front and who have no intention whatsover of overtaking the slower moving car. Many a trip to Wales has had its enjoyment curtailed whilst sitting at the back of a long line of Sunday Drivers with no space to overtake safely.

I passed one a few weeks ago who I can only think must've been rudely awoken from their slumber by my overtake. (Car's a wee bit noisy when the loud pedal's utilised in such circumstances.)

I'd been approaching him at a fairly robust speed differential, (they were driving very slowly in an NSL), on a completely straight and otherwise empty piece of road, so a good distance back I assumed a position, (straddling the white line), giving me good visibility ahead.

As I got the the commitment point, I indicated and gave a quick flash, (I do this and some may consider it antagonistic, but my intentions are pure!), to make them aware of my presence/intentions and gunned it past.

In my mirror I witnessed them swerve briefly, indicate, wash and wipe the windscreen then flash repeatedly while I reduced to a dot in front of them.

My apologies for waking you up you tit!!!

I too have had this happen and to be perfectly honest I think it's amazing that some of you haven't. It's nothing to do with the way you overtake, it's the fact these drivers want to be at the front and everyone is behind doing the speed dictated to by them regardless of limit.

I get it on occasion. Even if it is the same 'style' of overtake as before and the 10 people I overtook before did not take offence.

On occasion, I miscalculate and the flashing is deserved.

One occasion, I overtook a car and got back to my side of the road, they did not take offence, neither did the car that was oncoming (with safe distance), but the 3rd driver in the oncoming lane decided to inform me of their inability to assess anything happening on the road by flashing me multiple times (after the usual wipers/windscreen wash/indicator flash prior to locating the lights).
