4 Seat Convertible
Discussion
I'm new here, Hello to everyone.
I have a conundrum.
I need a new car.
It must be a 4 seat convertible.
It must have isofix (kid seat connection) in the front passenger and back seats.
It must be a sensible drive when the kids in the car, but have some balls when the kid isn't.
I'd prefer rear wheel drive, but might be flexible on that.
I don't want anything too big.
My other car is the big family mobile, this one must be a sporty little number.
So, I'm not looking for an A5 or CLK.
I'll be happy with anything around 2-3 years old.
I'm looking at cars around 20k – although this is flexible.
My current shortlist is a BMW 135i M Sport.
I would consider the 3 series, but the boot it just too small when the roof is down.
Any suggestions from the learned people here?

I can't think of anything else that fits your criteria quite as well as the 135i. The problem is that the majority of 4 seat convertibles are intended to be cruisers, with smaller roadsters for those seeking a fun to drive vehicle.
Mini Cooper S cabrio should be fun to drive, but is probably going to be too small given what you said about the 3 series boot space. Audi S4 might be an interesting car to consider. Smaller than the current 3 series, probably not as polished handling wise as the 135i, but hey, it's got a V8 so who cares about that

In all honesty the boots in virtually all convertibles is crap when the roof is down.

Welcome! I am relatively new to but I have found it a great forum as well.
what's "balls" to you? Personally when you mention children i would want a degree of safety as well I would think that a 6 series droptop or even a c70 volvo would fit most of your criteria. There really aren't a lot of amazing 4 seater convertibles out there. If you are willing to be a little more risky and go with an older car maybe an XKR or XK8 convertible may be a choice as well. Good luck!

Surely if you have a "kid" requiring isofix stuff there will be a pram and associated paraphenalia, if so I cant see where you would put anything in a 1 series convertible ?
Though the 1 series convertible does actually look a bit like a pram anyway, that is a serious engine to put in a 1 series convertible though, suspect most are small petrols and 118/120d's.
The 1 series looks a bit wrong as a coupe and a convertible, 3 door is the best looking imho and the 1M gets away with the Bowler hat/Mazda 121 look because its a punped up M car and can be forgiven, sure a 135i convertible is nice but it just seems such a wrong combination, like really meaty gravy drizzled on a little pink cake.

How does a 1 series convertible have a larger boot than a 3 series convertible?
S4. We had fours days in the west country last year: two adults, two kids (8 & 10), hood down all the way. Soft bags are your friend, and packing into the corners. You could hardly get a pack of ciggies in the boot once we were ready to go, but everything was in there.

save yourself a bit of cash and go for a E46 Beemer, some very low mileage examples around on 06 plates that have been used in the way you are also intending, as a second car. These have a very useful boot space as well as coming with the option of a removable hard-top for the winter ir required. You will get a virtually brand new condition vehicle for around £12k-£13k
add that even M3s in superb condition would leave you with a fair bit of cash towards the slightly higher running costs..superb cars

Small 4 seat convertible? That is narrowing your list down somewhat. However I would break one of your criteria (2-3 yrs old) and look at a 911.

I'd be looking at the new(ish) folding roof Volvo C70 in T5 guise - but the OP negelected to mention a budget.
Oh no I didn't.It's behind you. etc.
About 20k.
I have looked in the 1 series convertible boot.
It's suprisingly large for a small car - with the roof and up and down.
The 3 boot is OK when the roof is up, but with the roof down the space is really small.
Although, not as small as the Lexus - you could barely fit a pair of shoes in there with the roof down.
As for how much balls.
I've owned an S2000 and a Z4, so I'd like something with similar or better performance.
Nice idea on the Porsche, but I'm not going that old.
They just have too much potential for high running costs as bits start dropping off.

(That's not a comment on porshes, but just old cars in general)
I might take a look at the saab.
Although my current motor is an A4 cabrio, and the Saab just seems a sideways step, much like the Volvo.
It's a bit if a tricky question really.

The 6 series is worth considering, and I’ll take a look at it.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3160058.htm
But it’s always struck me as a big old tourer, and I’m looking for something with a bit of go-kart in its ancestry.
(I write this from a position of assumptive ignorance, as I’ve never actually driven one.)
The A4 is nice, but I have one already (Although not as well specced as the one posted) and I fancy a change.
