My mercedes has factory fitted 225/45 ZR 17 on the front and 245/40 ZR 17 rears. Can I safely fit 225/45 ZR 17 all round? Will the wheels be the same size front and rear? Any advice would be appreciated as it seems difficult to find a definative answer elsewhere.

Your wheels will be the same front and rear, it appears the rear tyres
are just slightly lower profile.
Putting 45s on the rears will make your speedo under-read slightly. Not a massive issue, but modern cars can have their speedos recalibrated if you wish.

I'd check first - it may be that the rear wheels are a wider than the fronts - my BMW has 225/40 on the front (8" wheel width) but 255/35 on the rear (8.5" width). If this is the case, then 225 may be too narrow for the rear wheels.

How sure are you of that?

My E Class has wider wheels (by 1 inch IIRC) on the rear, I'm pretty sure my old C Class did too.

You're right, and I should have read the OP correctly in the first place.

OP, you need to find the width of your wheels. With any luck, 8.5J will be stamped somewhere on your rear wheels. If it's anything bigger than that, you'll have problems trying to fit 225s on them.

Why not just fit OEM rated and sized tyres, and save altering the ride and handling of the car, and potentially invalidating your insurance? Is it a money saving thing?

By the way I recon you have wheels which are at least half an inch wider at the back.
