I have a question about the workings of a multi car policy:

I do not own the cars yet but will buy the following:
A Z3 worth about 4-5k (probably with some mods)
A Honda Jazz worth about 3-4k
These 2 I will buy within the next 2 months.

By Jan/Feb next year I will add a X3 3.0i to the fleet,around 5-7k value.

So,
Do I need to have multiple cars to get a multi car policy or can I get the policy started with the first car and then add to it?

I assume multi car policy is the way to go when you have more than 1 car?

Yes you start a policy and then add subsequent cars - so the policy length isn't a full year for the subsequent cars.

Whether it is a good deal or not varies by person as with all insurance, the only way to know is to run some quotes.

Or (if you're thinking of Admiral Multicar) you could, you know, look up the company's website (which answers this very question clearly) or, even, ring them and ask how it works?

As to whether it's the way to go - that can't be answered by anyone on here as no-one will have exactly the same risk profile and car collection as you. It is the way to go for some people and it isn't for others.

This year our multi car policy was more expensive than the individual renewals. When we tried to get the proof or now claims out of them, it was a nightmare.

If you have two drivers (or more) on the policy ensure that they have you down as a main driver of at least one of the cars.
We had this for most of the policy, but then when we changed the cars round something went wrong with the policy and I effectively lost a few years from my NCB. Very unhappy.

I have a multicar policy with Admiral (3 cars in total) which I started when I bought my Astra in January.

Basically they started with that car but took details of the cars I would be adding and when, they then told me how much each of these cars would be able to add for the remainder of the year.

They also gave me initial discount on the Astra based on how many cars I was adding and if I didn't add all of the cars they made me aware I may owe them some of that discount back.

We also changed the wifes car recently and so I just told them we will be adding a mini instead of the jag X-type, no dramas they just told me what the alternative premium will be.

The way it works out compared to when I had two cars insured seperately last year is that the astra is effectively costing me nothing to insure.

You may want to look at private / mini fleet sort of policy (Tradex insurance does it), mine works out just a bit more expensive than a single car with the highest insurance premium and modifications don't increase it.
