As many of you can probably relate it's time for me to tighten my belt a further notch and trade my car for something "economical".
I currently have a 53 plate Civic type-r, it's on 70,000 with a FSH but despite this the warm hatch market isn't good at the moment and i can't see me getting more than £4,000 for it. Realistically i'm expecting £3,500 part-ex value.
So high mileage diesel Audi A4's or mk4 golfs. any words of advice or avoidance?

Why are you choosing between cars from different segments? Surely you should be comparing A4 vs Passat, and A3 vs Golf?

Personally I'd say neither; the smart money would buy an Octavia if you like your VAG products.

I see what you mean, it wasnt meant as a comparison it was just two cars locally that i like the look of and were diesel.
It doesn't necessarily have to be VAG I was just wondering if it was false economy to buy either of the above cars close to 100,000

Wouldn't bother myself, they tend to be fairly prone to expensive problems at that age.

I'd take a look at the Volvo S60 D5, a far better value for money proposition. £4k would get you a facelift model with a higher spec than you'd get in a Golf or A4 and with a reasonable amount of miles on it.

A Golf with a 1.9TDI lump will be fairly solid. As said above though the Octavia will be get you more for your money.

A mark two Toledo Tdi on an 04 plate represents even better value

I have a 2003 1.9 TDI Mk4 Golf.

It has 227,000 miles on the clock.

Owned by my dad previously, apart from servicing and the occassional CV boot, etc. Its never let us down.
