Broken bonnet release - Any brainwaves

Thanks for the suggestions guys! My mate wasn't too keen on the can opener approach, although I fancied having a go with it!!!! :-)
Turns out that the broken arm is a plastic arrangement, clipped into plastic, so didn't take too much prising with a screwdriver to get it loose, and then pull the whole assembly to pull the cable and release the bonnet.
It appears as though the reason it's become broken is due to the cable getting stuck inside the plastic sheath it runs in, so the only way to operate the catch is to pull the whole cable sheath and all!!!
Still, saved him having to replace a siezed engine.
