Learned masses,

The time has come once again where the hunt is on for new (and I use that term loosely) wheels and unfortunately, I've run into the problem of thinking I'm settled on something, only to spot something else and think "Ooooooooh, I could have that."

Now, criteria:
  • less than 1500 knicker.
  • vaguely economical. This is a big 'un. Having run a FTO and a 328i, I'd like something that does a bit better than 200 miles a tank. I can deal with 30mpg - the car's only really gonna be a runabout, with the occasional 250-mile trip. Diesels can also be considered.
  • Fun-ish. After having two immensely fun (and somewhat powerful) motors, I've gotten used to a bit of behind the wheel entertainment.
  • reasonably clean and not too painful on the wallet to keep running. I have the knowledge of in-depth car maintenence, but not the ability to apply it. hehe
Currently, I have too many ideas floating about my head - from a Fiesta Zetec S to an E30 318iS to a 306 D-Turbo - so any and all suggestions are viable. Your help is much appreciated chaps!

I have a little Seat Cordoba Tdi Coupe as a runabout, quite fun to drive relatively (its a Mk3 Golf underneath) & does 55mpg all day long. The Seat's came with AC/Leather etc as opposed to the Polo versions in pauper spec. Cost me £600 with a years T&T, plus its pretty mint too & it's been a great shed.

Ah, should've said as well - I'm a 19y/o male living in a rather poor postcode, so nothing too ruinous to insure. Though I would quite happily give away a teste to have a Golf VR6.

Built in Nav, half leather, nice sounding 5 cylinder chain-cam engine, decent steer and costs bugger all to run/ insure.

ETA, or how about a Ford Puma?

:O For the engine and spec, that Toledo looks a steal. Duly noted.

As for the Puma, hadn't considered that. I do like the idea of a "FTO, but smaller"...

My mind has wandered a different path now and I'm trying to see if there's any decent 6-pot diesels within budget. Only things that spring to mind are 325tds and some of the bigger Merc's. I'm not too keen on the tds as I've already done the E36 thing. A mid-90's E300 with some AMG fairydust on the exterior and a cheeky remap sounds appealing. Any alternatives?

Thought of an EP3 Type R?

Edit: noticed the OP's budget, sorry!

A potentially top barge. I say potentially because I ran a Megane 1.5dCi of a similar vintage and my main gripe was that NOTHING electrical worked as it should and I'd say the Vel Satis has even more trickery to go wrong. Wouldn't mind an old-school Safrane though...

Some unexpectedly good choices here, keep it up!

ETA: I don't see myself in a Type-R somehow, Brighton traffic branch would have a field day with me hehe

Shameless self-bump.

Also I've now got a lesser budget (£1000) and am gravitating towards cheap hot hatches. Any opinions on Saxo VTR's? Don't see myself getting insured on a VTS/106 Gti

VW Mk3 Polo GT.

75bhp in a sub 800kg. Easily tuned on a tight budget to nigh on 100bhp.

Rust is the killer. Nothing else goes wrong really, not much to go wrong engine wise and the 1.3 8v engine is a tough old unit.

Yes it's small and old, but damn good fun cheap motoring.

I also second the Golf VR6 notion. I had one for two years. Good cars and if you avoid a rotbox/lemon, very little goes wrong (waterpump was the worst I had, £130 bill to fix).

I've considered the classic route, but anything within my budget is going to be an utter pig. Which is a shame, I was quite looking forward to blatting about in an MGB GT on the cheap!

Also, is there such thing as a *decent* Mini below £1k? I've had more notions, including a Fiesta Zetec-S (99-02) and a Manta GTE I found on eBay for £850.

Final question: anyone with experience of a E34 525tds? Or even a diesel E38 of the same vintage?
