Do you ever see the artists impressions and concept cars online and think it looks the business and the specification talks the car up well.

But then at the 11th hour the specification falls away, or the actual production body design loses it's nuances or grows bulges or bumpers or silly environmental add ons that spoil the car.

I hope Alfa don't do this with the 4c or BMW with their i-range, but I guess it's inevitable. Any others examples of:

Concept Hot -> Production Not

For this reason concept cars don't even get a second glance from me.

Lexus LFA. The concept looked like it was from another planet [I think it was the second concept]. I feel the production version got a f*cked up front end that brought it back down to earth...though I still want one smile

GroundEffect - you are strong-minded. I catch a little glimpse and get all excited.

Two of the most obvious reasons I can think of why are;

1) crash/impact protection
2) manufacturing costs

- neither of which is a consideration for a concept car.

If concept cars mattered at all then Jaguar would own BMW, Mercedes and the entire VAG group.

XJ220 - perfect example.

Concept, 4wd V12 220mph

reality - 2wd V6 from a metro (albeit the 6r4) and "only" managed 217mph without cats at the Nardo bowl.
I suspect the recession may also have played a part.

er.. just about every one?!

Most notable for me:
- first boxster; the concept was just awesome.
- alfa brera; ditto.

The Brera would be the most obvious recent example for me. The concept was a lovely looking front engined RWD sports coupe; the production model was an ugly, misproportioned, poor handling FWD hatchback.

Road Test
I understand that any cars looks are personal opinion but to me that looks stunning. You've never driven an SV6 if you think they are poor handling.

CX-F concept:

First stab at the XF:

The finished product is a handsome vehicle but I couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed after seeing the concept. The facelift's fixed the "wearing glasses" look of the original and looks better for it.

Concepts are built by stylists, but the real thing has to be built by accountants and engineers. It need to be built to a price, sell well, and be easy to mass produce. Unfortunately concept cars don't fit that model.
