I was just reading powwerr's topic on his winter snotter Jeep. Seen as we are into September and the weather is getting worse I am also considering getting myself a winter snotter. My little 205 GTI got a bit of a battering last winter (all the heavy snow and ice). The snow got behind the paint in the sills and wheels and made a mess, plus I had an off straight through a brick wall due to the ice. I thought I'd put it to bed this year.

What would you get...

- Up to £500 ish
- Realiable in nasty weather
- Will pull through snow and ice ok
- Not to thirsty or bad on insurance

Subaru justy! 1.3 but about 750kg and 4wd with skinny wheels. Put some winter rubber on there and I can see it being quite unstoppable...

This. Finding one might be difficult though.

You might be able to haggle to get this Suzuki X90 though:

That's genius! Different to all other 4x4's around this winter and it's slow speed and poor handling don't matter when there is a load of snow on the road. It would look great with some chunky tyres too. Take the top off, wrap up warm, turn the heating up full and have fun. Not something said about an X90 often I suspect. Were these based on Vitaras because they have good 4x4 systems on them.

A Vitara or whatever old Subaru you can find is the way to go, most other stuff will be knackered or less capable for the same price.

Make sure it has the right tyres too, although my old Forrester was fine on regular Bridgstone Dueller HT tyres in the worst of the snow last year.

Sorry guys X90 are not 4 wheel drive - only two.
We used the 4motion golf last year - I got fed up towing people in the Navara, when went out in the Golf no-one asked for a tow. I nearly got t-boned by some muppet in a scenic, as he slid out of a side road.

The Golf is good but on a £500 budget - its got to be a vitara, or a sportrak, or if you can find one spend a bit more and get an early impreza.

I just bought a very nice Golf Gti for this purpose.

A pair of winters on the front for acceleration and braking and job done.

4x4's can be a pain as they have a high C of G and tend to be heavy so there's a lot of momentum to shed.

Last year we had an XC90 and a Audi A6 on winters - both of us felt far safer in the Audi.

Small hatch with a pair of winters. My Astra never failed to start, even after I bumped it paperbag

Something Jap is probably a good start, maybe a Corolla or Starlet? smile

Wouldnt trust wiki, but in this instance it is right, so not for the first time I stand corrected, I have only seen 3 x90 all 2wd and driven only 2wd, so i wonder how common they are in the uk!

For what it was worth it was ok, but I would still go for a vitara as the choice of examples is massive.

There are 4wd versions. It's exactly the same as a vitara, so can be lifted, etc. Some folks get them, and mod them up for off road use.
