The Schlumpf Collection. Lots of Bugattis.
Discussion
Visited the Schlumpf Collection a couple of weeks ago in Mulhouse, France. It's a giant car collection built up by a pair of French industrialists who then went and did horrible things, resulting in the cars being donated to the nation. It's seriously amazing, you should make an effort to go if you're anywhere near the area.

Agreed the place is stunning and well worth the trek.
The Schlumpf brothers didn't really do horrible things - they just didn't pay taxes and tried to hide their wealth from their workforce, who were being paid their normal wages anyway. I must say I have some sympathy with that approach...

Looks good - I've often thought about visiting, but I've never got around to it.
Am I right in thinking that this is now a national motor museum, like Beaulieu? Certainly the R8 post dates the Schlumpfs by many years...
There's another good museum (less Bugatti obsessed
) in Loheac in Brittany.

Tax evasion and wage squeezing is certainly popular at the moment - they'd go down a STORM in the current financial climate...It's funny really - not paying taxes and milking your staff is considered (by those who do it, at least) as keeping what is 'theirs' but claiming benefits (rightfully or wrongfully) is considered below contempt despite the fact that most people are just taking money they've already paid...
It's a bit like drink driving, which is seen as outrageous by people who chat into their phones, speed, don't bother indicating, cut people up, force their way into traffic queues and a million other things which are every bit as dangerous to others...
We live in a strange world - made stranger by the distorted lenses most people view it through...

Thanks. Someone pointed that out on another forum but I was too lazy to edit the master post Is it an original Alfa 8C?

I corrected it on Flickr though.More pics there btw: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drjonboyg/sets/721576...

Pretty good wiki article on it; sounds more typically French - strikes, worker insurrection, and nationalisation.

Oh wow!!!
I remember going here as a kid (maybe 8 or 9) in the late 80's and thinking it was pretty amazing, just didn't realize it's significance until now. The two cars I remember they had on display were a Black and Blue Bugatti Royale that my dad told me was the most valuable car in the world, and a BMW M1 which I thought was the coolest looking car I'd ever seen.
Did you get any pics of these two beauties?

If they're not in the linked Flickr set, then sadly not. The credit for the pics must go mainly to my wife, she took almost all of them.

Spooky - I was only thinking this morning that it would be worth putting up a post to let the masses know about Manoir De L'Automobile in Loheac. Fantastic place with more and more interest at every corner. The F1 room is something to behold.
