Slight pub fight:

What diesel cars really be fast, drivable and still worth having for the higher MPG, for UNDER £10k?

Opinions?

Or are the 'super diesels' all higher priced?

Fabia VRS springs to mind.

Doesn't seem so long ago that a Merc W210 TD with 177BHP seemed quick.

I've got a mk1 Fabia vRS. It's not 'fast' per se, but it is reasonably quick. They remap easily though. And you can get a decent one for under £5k now, let alone 10.

BMW 330d/530d and even perhaps an early 535d.

Audi 3.0Tdi.

Fabia vrs will certainly do a good job of keeping up with a 5.0 Chim. Don't ask me how I know this.

If this had been a 150PD and with some other additional mods also (remap, exhaust, intake)

Get £275 knocked off this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2911286.htm

Can't be many queuing up to buy one in a poverty spec 4 door body.

282bhp, 430 lb ft, Sixty in 6 secs, 155mph (limited), around 40mpg (official).

Then remap it, obviously - after which it will be able to do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. wink

Some Diseasels might be fast, but they're not fun. Come on guys, this is Pistonheads; doesn't What Car? have a forum?

Just because many of the cars the engines are in are boring, doesn't mean the diesel engines are.

Any car with a Diesel engine would be less boring with a petrol engine. 330d or 335i? I know which is more PH. Why would any true enthusiast choose the Diesel, unless they were on a restricted company car list?
