Hi all,

I would like to canvas your opinion if you don’t mind.

I have the plate below on my Audi A5, it's just what came on the car when I bought it, I've added the space in the picture just using MS paint.

A few people have commented on my "Private plate"...........

I do have a plate to go on the car and was wondering what the consensus is, do you think it's worth putting this one on retention and trying to flog it for a few 100 quid or not?

Cheers,
Nick

I've got no interest in keeping it on my car and changing the spacing to look like the image as my name is not Jimmy.

My question is do you think it's worth taking a punt on spening 80 quid to put it on retention and then trying to sell it or will no one want it and I get stuck with it.

Cheers,
Nick

I'd flog it.

My shed came with an MNN XXX plate where the XXX contains my initials and I've had about 10 people ask me if I bought it privately now...

Yours is worth more I suspect - tho as I suspect mine was a private plate originally (numbers under 100 were back on 'M' reg??) it probably cost more than the car is WORTH now smile

p.s. one person said "oh it's a shame you won't be able to keep that plate then" and I've no idea what he was on about - are some plates not transferrable (not that I intend to)??

Well EJ54MYS is listed on-line at £1,888 and I have no idea what that's supposed to say, so it might be worth giving it a a go.

Some plonker will give you a few quid for that I'd imagine.

I am more than happy to be proved 100% wrong on this........ but I thought there were two different types of plates assigned to vehicles. One type was "transferrable" and one type was "non-transferrable" and it states on the V5 which you have on your vehicle.

So what do you have on yours? It looks like a standard assigned plate EJ11 MYS - so I would guess non-transferrable.

I am curious - as if your nickname is Blaky - I have a brilliant plate for sale from one of my bikes. I thought there was nothing I could do about it as it is marked as non-transferrable on the V5.

Found this:-

Whilst the dealers may sell it for £1k+ I doubt you'll get much for it ... perhaps enquire with a few companies first before putting it on retention?

The plate will be transferable. The only plates that are not transferable are the replacement plates. ie. the OP sells that rubbish Jimmy plate, the new plate he is assigned is not transferable. This stops people continually getting a 'free' plate from the DVLA and then selling it on (if by chance someone wants it).

Though these untransferable plates can still be replaced by a new private plate, you just can't sell them on, they are 'invisibly' kept with the car incase needed again.

Deffo worth selling, the plate that's on the Audi I've just bought will be coming off and going to someone more deserving.

I never knew that.

So my bike came with a number plate of BL54 AKY.

So I can sell my plate (if I wish) and then obtain a new plate, of (e.g.) WH54 ABC which I cannot sell.

If I decide to stick my own plate FATS25 on bike for a while, when I come to sell the vehicle, or move plate to another car, the plate WH54 ABC reverts back to the bike.

Is that correct?

The original plate goes back on the vehicle as they don't need to assign a new plate when a cherished number is taken off.

Yes.

To add to this, I think that if you add a private plate to your car without shifting the original number than that number becomes non-transferable and goes back to the car when the private plate is taken off.

Is it still true that you can take plates from bikes to cars but NOT vice-versa?

If you stick it on ebay it will end up being bought by someone who doesn't actually have an 11 plate car YET, then you'll go through untold hassle trying to work out how to transfer the plate to them without a car for it to go on. This will turn out to be a massive ballache and you'll wish you hadn't bothered.

So my advice (from experience) is don't bother - it will be a lot of hassle if you do manage to sell it (which you won't for anything more than about £50).

Can you not just transfer the retention document to them?
Or is that too obviously simple for the DVLA to do?

At somepoint that plate will get you fined as it is illegally spaced .... or has somebody said that already ..
