Going to Dover on Friday, leaving Cheshire at 4 pm ish.

Would you go down the M1 on to the M25 and to the East of the London, past Enfield and Dartford, or would you go down the M40 onto the M25 and round the West side and round the bottom, past Weybridge and Epsom?

Mileage wise there is only 5 miles in it-just thinking of the worst traffic.

In my experience, M40/M25 has consistently been a quicker route. However, given the roads involved, that can change all too quickly!

50mph limits on M1 near Luton for about 10 miles or so. Also anti clockwise on M25 from M1 50mph avg speed camera and road works for several miles too.

I live in Whitstable 50% of the time (30mls from Dover) and it will entirely depend on what time you hit the northern section of the M25.

Given your options, personally I would take the second option every time.

What a brave man to do that journey, at that time, on a Friday afternoon. The approach via Calais is not such a far fetched suggestion.

If you must do it then M40, southern M25, M26 and M20.

Should arrive in time for breakfast eek

Definitely the M25 top route and over the bridge, but the whole deal is about timing, and that's not a good time to be doing it. M6 will be a nightmare.
Just use the roads for travelling on when, other people aren't ...

Hmmm. Thanks for the advice. I think I might leave at 6 instead.

Cheshire - Newcastle - Hook of Holland - Belgium - Calais - Dover*

  • you may or may not want to do the last leg.
