It's got to be the gold plated titanium Facom set that came with the McLaren F1's, surely?

Edit - too late!

My Dad's 1983 7 Series. Every BMW I've owned since then has come with a progressively smaller toolkit. The X5 toolkit consists of a reversible Philips/slot screwdriver (they've had the same one in the kits for at least 28 years), the wheel locking nut key and the towing eye. The 1980s one had an array of high quality spanners. Even the five year old M5 has a coupe of spanners, still inthe classic pull down in the bootlid.

Think you're confused. The engine bay was lined with gold, the toolkit was titanium.
Gold plated titanium, I'm sure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_F1 - Wikipedia can't be wrong, surely?!

I reckon it was probably plasma nitrided titanium. It's a hardening finish and it looks gold. Why would you gold plate a toolkit?

My apologies! Why the hell would you coat your tools in gold though?
Dunno, because you can? Suppose they'll match the engine bay though.

I can't imagine the kits getting much use from the owners, can you?

Aye, if I remember rightly it's mentioned in the Driving Ambition book.

Gold is one of the best heat repellers known to man so therefore your tool kit will stay at it's optimum working temperature ....... wink

it's not the owners that used them but the mechanics which get sent out to fettle the cars at the owners garage, IIRC

Bizarre. Where on the McLaren site? The wikipedia link to it doesn't work.

Fair point. Although, I would have thought that the mechanics would take a selection of tools with them? I can't imagine a McLaren trained mechanic rocking up and expecting to use the owners tools.

Well, if I was a F1 owner I'd expect them to come fully prepared for the task anyway. Fortunately (my arse), I don't have to worry about such things!

I believe it had a small tool pouch in the car for 'on the road repairs':

And a tool chest so a Mclaren mechanic could fly to a customer anywhere in the world and work on the car:

I googled "McLaren F1 toolkit" It was the second hit.
Cool, thanks - laziness for not googling it.
