Strange situation with the winter tyres, thought it would be a good idea to beat the rush and get a set at the same time as refurbing the spare set of wheels and get it all done in one go.... but it turn out that they don't come in stock with the manufactured or a few weeks/ month/ random time or so yet. Bonkers.

There is a salt mine a few miles from here, bks to winter tyres. Last year there wasn't even enough snow to do skids around to local business park. frown

I should of added if it is marked out of stock, yes some sizes are in stock, but not mine and the reply is the same from a few places all putting it down to supply form the manufacturer.

Maybe the next batch isn't due for a couple of months, but I've seen winter tyres for sale (and been considering) for months, as you don't want to be buying them when you actually need them, but months before - just like trying to buy 'Ring Taxi laps by just turning up (i.e. unlikely to work).

Most all weather/summer tyres start to feel hard when the temp goes to 7 degrees C or lower. Depending where in the UK you live, our nights wont have lows of 7 or so, till as late as November/december. I suppose those of you up north are preparing early.

Indeed. As demand increase, prices will too (in fact, some have said they've beenwatching prices and have seen them start to climb already)

This actually does work. Have done it twice (once for me, once for a friend). As long as you're prepared to share the car, it quite easy to do.

I wanted winter tyre's last year, kept getting fobbed off with "we don't get any call for winter tyre's" (no st Sherlock, that's because most Brits are idiots who'd rather buy a sports 4x4) and "can't get them yet", then once the prices went through the roof everyone had them in stock.

You will understand the need when you sit there spinning with 0.1cm of snow in a high(ish) powered rearwheel drive auto with wide tyres.

I've ordered 4 Vredestein Quatrac3s for my stagea; the tyre fitters say they'll be there 1st week in October.

Are there really lots of people on here who have/buy winter tyres? I live in Worcestershire - we had a fair bit of snow (12 inches on my road at peak) yet I still managed to drive around without any problems.

I could just about understand it if you lived in the middle of nowhere somwhere ooop north (in which case I am guessing you would own a 4x4 anyway), but is investing in another a set of tyres not over doing it slightly given that we only have snow for a few weeks over the winter.

Just wondered.

Yes.

With all respect, your post is both ignorant and selfish. There are numerous threads on this already, but the fact is that winter tyres offer better grip for about 4-5 months in the UK, whether there is snow or not.

Oh no, not this again! It took until about three months after winter for the last thread to die biggrin

I saw an advert for Michelin winter tyres on TV the other day so they must be available.

No it's not. Just another view point in a country which still allows freedom of speech, and one which I agree with wink

My wifes Fiesta is truley shocking when the temp drops, its only a basic 1.4 zetec climate, but has some stupidly low profile 15" rims as standard. on the stock rubber its lethal when it gets cold, no compliance and no grip.

it needs a cheap set of 14" steelies and some higher profile winter rubber

nono

Ignorant? Not sure why you think this!? This is the first thread I have personally seen on winter tyres. I personally don't have the time to trawl through every thread on PH relating to tyres - I saw this one at the top of the posts and thought I would ask what I thought was a reasonable question.

Selfish? Again, a bit bemused with this. Not sure why asking a reasonable question could be viewed as selfish. Perhaps you think I live in the middle of a big city and have no idea what it is like to drive on dodgy roads. As it happens, I grew up in the countryside and I also shoot all over the UK, which means in the winter I travel to a lot of remote places where winter tyres could potentially be viewed as beneficial.

Finally, other than snow and a bit of ice (rural worcestershire is pretty much the same as any other rural county) I can't say I have experienced winter driving conditions for 4/5 months in the UK which were that far removed from summer driving conditions - certainly not enough to warrant changing my tyres.

I have never met anyone who has used winter tyres, so was interested to understand why people who do have them use them.

Got mine a month or so ago from Costco - they had to order them in, but came in a couple of days.

I heard a couple of weeks ago they now have them in stock.

I've just got a new set of them, all weather tyres strictly speaking, not specific winter tyres

at most you are 'investing' in one extra fitting charge (or possibly an extra set of steel rims), you don't throw away your summer tyres in autumn, and throw away your winters in spring

Maybe so but they get a good write up, and I don't do enough miles to justify 2 sets of wheels so the Quatrac seemed like a good compromise. If we get a bit of the white stuff this winter I'll see if they live up to their reputation.
