New Alpina D5 Biturbo Unveiled
Alpina gets to the fast diesel 5-series before M Division
There's been plenty of talk recently about possible plans for an M-tuned diesel 5-series but, as usual, Alpina seems to be half a step ahead of the company whose cars it bases its own products on: meet Buchloe's own super-fast diesel, the Alpina D5 Biturbo.
The headline stats are that Alpina has squeezed 345bhp from the BMW 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. This equates to a top speed of 168mph and 0-62mph in 5.2secs.
Perhaps more impressive, however, is the fact that Alpina has managed to do so while maintain the same fuel economy rating (45.6mpg) as the 241bhp 530d.
The power drives the rear-wheels via an Alpina-tuned eight-speed ZF auto and, as you'd expect, the tuner/manufacturer also chucks in its own bespoke springs, along with the ususal multi-spoke 20-inch alloys.
Oddly, Alpina doesn't give a torque figure for the new car. Perhaps that's because it feels that torque is cheap...

how much?
70 err thousand err euros.....Im sure someone will be along in a minute to point out that for 30k less they could buy a 535d and remap it (without actually understanding what else alpina did to the engine) to get the same power output.
An awesome car and possibly the most powerful derv saloon on the road thus far.
Torque has been 'unofficially' confirmed as above 650Nm.

70k euros doesn't actually sound too bad to me... and 650NM that's - what - 479lb ft in 'real money'? Hmmm... that doesn't sound quite enough, somehow...Im sure someone will be along in a minute to point out that for 30k less they could buy a 535d and remap it (without actually understanding what else alpina did to the engine) to get the same power output.

Having recently purchased a 550i petrol V8 5 series estate (having previously run a 535d version) I've got to say that going back to a petrol performance engine was the best thing I ever did. As mighty fast as these diesels are, they have none of the rev range, adjustability or aural involvement that performance cars require. The 535d used to feel like a nuclear power station with an on/off switch for a throttle. I love the cornering adjustability that playing with the revs between such a broad range now offers. Honestly, the extra fuel cost is a price worth paying for the extra enjoyment (not to mention how much cheaper the petrol V8s are second hand now!). I'd take the B5S over this thank you.
