Socks better on snow, chains better on ice. Take your pick really.

Since both suffer approximately the same limitations, albeit for different reasons, of not being usable on a clear road surface and of being limited to 50 kph / 30 mph, I tend to think of snow socks as being cheaper less resilient equivalents of snow chains.

Depending on how much money you are willing to spend there is a range for ease of use with snow chains.

If there are any gaps in the snow or ice at all the socks will wear really quickly and just not worth the money. Chains will last for years and years as long as you don't change your wheel and tyre size too much.

I bought socks, they work really well. However, 18" wheels with very little gap at the top of the arches means they are an absolute pain to get on.
