Somone help me grow some balls
Discussion
After much tyre kicking I've now decided to finally bite the bullet and get a new set of wheels. I've bored my wife because I don't know what to do and ultimately just need a shove. I'd love a vantage but only have £40k, I've seen one which I like but the mileage is 50k which by the looks of things is high for a car of this type. I decided a few weeks I couldn't afford one and started looking at 997s. I trawl the internet starting at the cheapest first then working my way up to the early gen2 cars. I've seen one for £42k that looks good but it's an auto. On the Gen2 is this box better than the tiptronic? Also is there any point in getting a gen2 is it that superior?
Porsche has four seats I have a 1 and a 2 year old which is a bonus.
The Aston will wind up all my colleagues and probably my wives parents. The porsche I might be able to get away with better.
Can someone tell me what to do as I'm even boring myself now.

Gen2's are worth it over the gen1.
1. New stronger engines with more power 320 vs 340 or 350 vs 380 + no IMS
2. Nicely redesigned centre console with touch screen nav and Ipod connection etc..
3. Mild front and rear end changes with LED rear lights lift the car IMHO
4. Re worked front suspension giving more bite to the front end.
5. Gen2 has PDK (double clutch gearbox) with launch control which is miles away from the Tiptronic slush boxes in the Gen1
HTH.

Is that a positive, or a negative?
I'm afraid I can't help you decide between the two, though I can add to the confusion slightly...
Both of the below (can) have four seats, and can be had for that sort of money:

He's right......1 ^^^^^^^^Vantage doesn't work for me either!! Hmmm.....40k budget eh? I think a nice Porker should be easily attained for that. Nice position to be in fella. Those pesky Pistonhead classifieds will keep you busy looking!
For 40K you have a massive choice to get in a breathtaking car. Good luck with your search and post pics!
You could get yourself in a really nice late M6 for that money - a late model with all the toys. Understated, classy, that awesome V10 motor that's now being dropped from their line up......
I had an Ason DB9 and an M6 - the M6 absolutely slaughtered the DB9 in all departments apart from looks. The DB9 is one of the best looking cars of all time in my opinion but just didn't deliver for me - they sound nice though!

Firstly, its a nice position to be in and have the dilemma so try and enjoy it whilst you can!
I note from the tone of your post that there seems to be some 'issue' with perception and worrying what others will think - which is a bit of a worry really.
Its already influencing your decision and ultimately unless you can pick 'the car that YOU want'...
Once you've been honest with yourself about the car that you want to drive then you can concentrate your efforts, and not feel compromised once the deal has been done!
Without a little more detail about what you need from the car its difficult to offer any real advice on what would suit you best, but one thing that did strike me about your potential choices was - With a new generation 911 looming, I would have thought you'd be in a good bargaining position for the outgoing 997 model which others might be trading in for a new ride... A bargaining point perhaps, and more availability of the transmission type you'd prefer.
Im a Porsche person (obviously from my ID), but I would urge you to have what you want whilst you have this opportunity!

Good post. I think that if I had the dosh at the present moment, I'd seriously consider a porker. A few friends have them as everyday cars and they're all happy with them - most of them are on their third or fourth 911, so they must be fairly special...I note from the tone of your post that there seems to be some 'issue' with perception and worrying what others will think - which is a bit of a worry really.

Go for Pork as new as you can afford, steer away from the tiptronics unless you are very old and infirm . As for the Aston lovely looking car but, there is always a but, my neighbour bought one a couple of years ago after drooling for years. It has turned out a major disappointment, looks great and he has nearly polished the paint of it. However driving it has been a let down, he did fifteen hundred miles in it last year.
I will now sit back with a glass of red and wait for the flaming from Aston and Tiptronic fans
Ps: whatever you choose enjoy, we are not here long !

You want to put two child seats in the porsche?
I'd *strongly* recommend that you actually check this out. imo the rear seats are for emergency use only - when I ran a 911 I had the child seat on the passenger seat and my wife folded into the rear. It really doesnt work.
The rear seats are fine for kids, my son has travelled in the back of a 3.2 carrera from 6 months old ,then a 964 until 7 years, then 2 996's until 17 years old without too many problems.I'd *strongly* recommend that you actually check this out. imo the rear seats are for emergency use only - when I ran a 911 I had the child seat on the passenger seat and my wife folded into the rear. No one will be able to fit in any of the rear seats in those Astons. And the Vanquish running costs will be ridiculous - needs servicing every 6 months.

I am way past child seats, but I am sure you can get child seats that fit the 911, my grandson sits happily in his dads Turbo. My son did a search on PH and was advised on several seats suitable.I'd *strongly* recommend that you actually check this out. imo the rear seats are for emergency use only - when I ran a 911 I had the child seat on the passenger seat and my wife folded into the rear. Talking of kids in the back, my kids did thousands of miles in the back of my 911s all be I had to open the windows for there legs when they reached seventeen
