There is a gap in my knowledge, can anyone help.

The Americans had the JEEP.

The Germans had the VW stuff, Kuebelwagen thingy.

What did we use?

The landrover had not been invented, I don't think the champ was around.confused

We must have stolen a few jeeps, but we must have had something first.

Oh
So a self made gap in my knowledge then.

I suppose if you are going to move people around, you might as well use a tuck and send some bits as well.

Before the Americans joined in with WW2 they had a policy called 'lease lend'. In effect they gave the allies loads of Military hardware (including jeeps) for free.

Not for free.

Free? They were certainly not free. We've only just finished paying it off! If you call having a house is free, as long as you pay the mortgage.

Funnily enough I found myself reading about the Universal Carrier the other day, the most produced armoured fighting vehicle in history. Wiki told me 113,000 were made.

This.

The suggestion that the Americans gave us Jeep's for free is ridiculous.
