First of let me say I don't know much about cars so could be wrong here.
I was out shopping yesterday and when I started the car on the way back home it sounded much louder. It sounds like there is air escaping from the exhaust system somewhere and creating a loud roar like you would hear from a modified exhaust.
I checked the underside of the car and the big cylinder shaped thing seems pretty old and damaged to me, it could easily have gas escaping.
So I want to know if this is common and how much it might cost to fix? I was planning on selling the car soon..
Thanks!

The whole exhaust is cylindrical wink

Helpfully though, you either need to weld a piece on or replace your exhaust, or you may even just need to replace the gasket where the manifold joins the exhaust

From your description, sounds like you are referring to the back box (cat if you are unlucky). I would guess you will not be doing the work yourself, so could be anything from £80-£150 I would guess, but you can double those numbers for cats in some cases.

Quikfit, as much as people on here berate them, are not too bad. Just ensure you don't get upsold things...

The car is a P reg polo which is prob worth about 600-700 , I don't see much point paying 100 quid or so to fix it but will go into kwik fit tomorrow and see what they say. I was thinking i could just put some black tape to close the gap :P

I have a P reg polo currently in my fleet, and had the same exhaust leak. A quick trip to halfords for some exhaust repair tape fixed the problem and it sailed through its MOT. A nice easy £3 fix smile

Seriously? Exhaust gets hot... black tape melts. Think, McFly wink

If you're lucky they might be able to seal the system with exhaust putty / cement - it's possible it's just blown apart. But pretty unlikely as they're in the business of selling exhaust systems. So expect at the least a £100 bill for a new section of exhaust..

£13.46 + vat centre box and pipe ,£19.06 + vat rear box and pipe for a 1.0l '96 polo although that's obviously without fitting
